Generate debate team names for school squads, speech and debate clubs, debating societies, mock trial and Model UN: craft puns like Warrant Officers and Prose and Cons, logic names like Red Herring Hunters, classical names like Cicero's Circle and plain shirt names like Varsity Debate.

About debate team names

A debate team name has two audiences: the people on the team, who want an inside joke, and the coach, the tab room and the judge reading it off a posting, who need something they can say out loud. The names that last do both. Warrant Officers, Bones of Contention and Prose and Cons are jokes a debater gets at once and a principal can still print on a shirt.

The list is built in nine groups and shuffled together. There are puns on the craft itself (rebuttals, cross-examination, flowing, prep time, the ballot), names taken from formats (Lincoln-Douglas, policy, public forum, parliamentary, student congress and the speech events), and logic and rhetoric names from Ethos, Pathos, Logos to Straw Man Slayers. Classical names borrow the orators and meeting places of Athens and Rome, such as Cicero's Circle and Voices of the Agora. Plain names like Varsity Debate and Falcon Forensics show a pattern you can fill with your own mascot.

Three smaller groups serve neighboring activities: British debating society forms (Sixth Form Debating Society, The Loyal Opposition), mock trial names (Objection Sustained, Twelve Angry Students) and Model UN names (Distinguished Delegates, United Notions). A last group is general wordplay, like Highly Debatable and Per My Last Rebuttal.

How to choose debate team names

  • Say it the way a tournament announcer would: 'In room 12, on the affirmative, Card Sharks.' If it is clumsy to read aloud or needs explaining, pick a shorter one.
  • Match the name to what you actually compete in. Grand Crossfire fits a public forum pair, Members of the House a parliamentary team, Leading the Witness a mock trial squad and Caucus Crew a Model UN delegation.
  • Swap in your own mascot. Entries like Eagle Debate, Tiger Talkers and Raven Rhetoric are patterns: keep the second word and replace the animal with your school's.
  • Run it past your coach before you order shirts. Everything here is meant to be school-safe, but a school may have its own rules about team names, and the coach is the one who has to enter it at registration.
  • Use the long name for the club and a short one for a pair. The Dialectic Society or Speech and Debate Squad suits a whole program, while Point Taken or Mic Drop suits two partners.

Frequently asked questions

What are some good debate team names?

For wordplay, try Warrant Officers, Clash Course, Bones of Contention or Prose and Cons. For a classical feel, Cicero's Circle, The Gadflies and Hortensia's Heirs work well. If you want something plain for a shirt, Varsity Debate or your mascot plus Forensics is hard to beat.

Are these names appropriate for school?

Yes. The list is meant for students and coaches, so it leaves out crude jokes, drinking jokes, party politics and living public figures. The orators used as mascots are all from ancient Greece and Rome. It is still worth a quick check with your coach, since schools set their own rules.

Are there names for mock trial, Model UN and British debating societies?

Yes, each has its own group. Mock trial names include Objection Sustained, The Defense Rests and Mock Trial and Error. Model UN names include Distinguished Delegates, Placards Up and Crisis Averted, and the British forms include Sixth Form Debating Society, The Front Bench and Hear, Hear.

Can I use a debate format in my team name?

Yes. Formats such as Lincoln-Douglas, policy, public forum and parliamentary are plain descriptions of how a round is run, so names like LD Legends, Policy Wonks and Parli Pros simply say what you do. A name of that kind does not mean any league or tournament is connected with your team.
