About Creole last names

Louisiana Creole surnames go back to the colony that France and Spain ran before 1803, so most are French, a good share are Spanish, and some are German names respelled by French clerks. New Orleans and the parishes around it give the list Rillieux, Glapion, Dejoie, Bagneris and Trevigne, the Cane River country near Natchitoches gives Metoyer, Llorens and Rachal, and the southwest prairies around Opelousas give Guillory, Fontenot, Simien, Lemelle and Frilot.

Two groups stand out by spelling. Germans who settled the German Coast above New Orleans in the 1720s became Schexnayder, Himel, Waguespack and Zeringue on paper, and one family, Zweig, was simply translated to Labranche. Canary Islanders who came under Spanish rule, the Isleños, left Estopinal, Nunez, Serpas and Melerine.

Creole and Cajun surnames overlap without being the same stock. Cajun names descend from the Acadian exiles who arrived from the 1760s, and a few of them, such as Boudreaux, Landry and Hébert, are here only because prairie Creole families carry them too. Haitian family names have their own page on this site. Creole families of every background share these surnames, through descent, marriage and the history of slavery, so a surname alone proves nothing about one person's ancestry.

How to choose Creole last names

  • Pick the region first. A New Orleans family might be Duplessis, Charbonnet or Tureaud, a Cane River family Metoyer or Rachal, a river parish family Haydel, Becnel or Waguespack, and a prairie family Guillory, Lemelle or Auzenne.
  • Say the names the French way. Final -eaux and -ot sound like "oh" in Boudreaux and Fontenot, and Hébert is "AY-bear".
  • Choose accents by era. Older records write Séjour, Villeré and Poché with their accents, while modern Louisiana usage often drops them, so a present-day character can be plain Poche.
  • Expect more than one spelling in a single family. Schexnayder and Schexnaydre, Himel and Hymel, and Trosclair and Troxclair are the same names as different clerks wrote them.
  • For a full character name, pair a surname from this list with a French given name of the right period. The Creole Name Generator on this site gives full first and last names.

Frequently asked questions

What are some well-known Louisiana Creole last names?

Names met again and again in Creole Louisiana include Guillory, Fontenot, Batiste, Duplessis, Metoyer, Honoré, Bienvenu, Charbonnet, Lemelle and Simien. All of them are in this list, next to rarer ones such as Rillieux, Glapion and Sorapuru.

What is the difference between Creole and Cajun last names?

Cajun surnames come from the Acadian exiles: Boudreaux, Thibodeaux, Landry, Hébert, Broussard. Creole surnames come from the older colonial population and its descendants, with names like Rillieux, Metoyer, Estopinal and Haydel. The two communities have lived side by side and intermarried for generations, so on the southwest prairies many families carry names from both.

Why are there German and Spanish names on a Creole list?

German farmers settled upriver from New Orleans in the 1720s, and French-speaking clerks and priests wrote their names as they heard them: Schexnayder, Waguespack, Tregre, Toups. Spanish rule in the late 1700s brought Canary Islanders with names like Estopinal, Molero and Falcon, and Spanish families such as Segura and Romero around New Iberia. All of them became part of French-speaking Creole Louisiana.

Does a Creole surname show a person's ancestry?

No. Families of French, Spanish, African, German and Native descent share the same surnames, and one name can belong to unrelated families. This list was screened for duplicates, so if a name matters for family research, confirm it in parish, church or census records.
