Chiss names are among the most structured in Star Wars, and Grand Admiral Thrawn is the perfect example. His full name, Mitth'raw'nuruodo, has three parts joined by apostrophes: Mitth is his Ruling Family, raw is the middle segment, and nuruodo is a personal suffix. Non-Chiss cannot easily pronounce these full names, so a Chiss uses a core name, formed from the middle syllables plus a bit of the surrounding parts: Mitth'raw'nuruodo becomes Thrawn, Mitth'ras'safis becomes Thrass, Chaf'orm'bintrano becomes Formbi.

The family prefix matters. In Timothy Zahn's Thrawn Ascendancy trilogy, the Nine Ruling Families include Mitth, Irizi, Csap, Chaf, Ufsa, Dasklo, Clarr, Boadil, and Obbic, with lesser families like Plikh, Stybla, Kiwu, Erighal, and Xodlak beneath them. Being merit-adopted into a Ruling Family changes a Chiss's name, which is why Thrawn (born Kivu'raw'nuru) carries the Mitth prefix. Military rank titles like Senior Captain, Mid Captain, Syndic, and Aristocra sit in front of the core name in everyday address.

The list below mixes canon Chiss such as Ar'alani, Thalias, Samakro, and Thurfian with new names built on the same rules: a real family prefix, a plausible core name in the middle, and a flowing suffix. Use the full form for formal introductions and the core name for dialogue.
