Browse 1,000 chiptune names for an artist alias, a chip-rock band, a duo or a tracker project. The list runs from closed-up handles like squarewav to phrases like Save Point Sunset and Noise Channel Four.

About chiptune names

Chiptune is music written for the sound chips of old consoles and home computers, or in that style, and its names come from the same parts bin. Many of these chips give a composer only a few simple voices, for example square or pulse waves with a selectable duty cycle, a triangle wave that often carries the bass, and a noise channel for drums. Chords are often faked with fast arpeggios because there are too few voices to hold them. That vocabulary turns straight into names such as Noise Channel Four, Duty Cycle Dolly and Triangle Bass Club.

The list covers the other habits of the scene too. Tracker users will recognize the pattern, row and hex-column jokes and the file names with extensions, like untitled_final.mod. Hardware names stick to generic words such as cartridge, handheld and link cable. Game phrases supply save points, continues and boss fights. Case is part of the style: closed-up lowercase handles (squarewav, bitrot), all-caps names (ARPEGGIA, VBLANK KIDS) and handles with dots or underscores sit beside ordinary title case.

There are also plural band names for chip-rock acts, sweet chip-pop names, darker glitch and breakcore-leaning names, persona names built on puns, and names for duos and collectives. Pick the register that matches how your music sounds.

How to choose chiptune names

  • Match the name to your setup. A handheld tracker project suits small, cute or lowercase names, while a chip-rock band with guitar and drums can carry a plural name like The Loading Screens.
  • Decide on the casing and keep it. If you pick bitrot in lowercase or ARPEGGIA in capitals, write it the same way on every release, flyer and profile.
  • Say it out loud before a show. Names with dots, underscores or file extensions look great on a release page but need a spoken version a host can announce.
  • Search the name on the music platforms and social sites you plan to use. The scene is small and friendly, and nobody wants to share an alias with an act that is already playing shows.
  • Skip console, chip and software brand names. Generic words such as cartridge, handheld and tracker say the same thing without borrowing someone else's brand.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like chiptune?

Words from the sound itself and from the machines. Waveform and channel terms (square, triangle, noise, duty cycle, arpeggio), memory and screen words (byte, sprite, scanline) and game phrases all point at the genre. Names in the list such as Two Squares and a Triangle, Sprite Limit and Extra Life Ensemble show the three sources.

Why are some names lowercase, all capitals or written like file names?

Because that is how many artists in tracker and netlabel circles style themselves. A closed-up lowercase handle reads like a file name or a login, and all capitals read like text on an old screen. The list includes each kind, for example dutycycle, NOISE FLOOR and heart.sav, so you can choose a look as well as a word.

Are these names of real chiptune artists?

No, the list is not a directory of the scene. The names were drafted as new ideas in the style of chip music, and some may match an act that already exists. We have not searched music platforms for each one, so look up your favorite before you release anything under it.

Can I use a name for a band, a duo or a collective?

Yes. Plural names such as The Save Files and The Blinking Cursors suit chip-rock bands, pairs like Square & Triangle or Peek & Poke suit duos, and names like Handheld Orchestra or Sound Chip Social Club fit a collective or a regular night.
