Find a name for a chihuahua: Mexican nicknames like Paco, Chuy and Lupita, food words like Churro and Frijolito, ironic giants like Goliath and Colossus, diva picks like Princesa and Consentida, and sassy names like Spitfire and Berrinche.

About chihuahua names

The chihuahua takes its name from the Mexican state of Chihuahua, so the largest part of this list is Mexican and Spanish. There are the everyday nicknames families really use, such as Paco, Chuy, Beto, Lupita and Chela, and affectionate words like Chiquita, Corazón, Cielito and Apapacho, a Mexican word for a cuddle. Food names are a favorite for the breed: Churro, Frijolito, Concha, Mazapán and Chiltepín, a round chile about the size of a pea. Places and nature fill out the Mexican side, from Parral, Creel and Paquimé in the home state to Nopal, Colibrí and Cempasúchil.

The rest of the list plays with size and attitude. A dog that weighs a few pounds can carry a tiny name (Peanut, Teaspoon, Centavo, Poquito) or an ironic giant (Goliath, Colossus, El Toro, or Popocatépetl, after the volcano). Diva names such as Princesa, Duquesa, Consentida and Fresa suit a dog that expects to be carried, and sassy names such as Spitfire, Berrinche, Fierecilla and Telenovela suit one that runs the house. A last group nods to the big ears, bright eyes and love of blankets: Radar, Orejitas, Ojitos, Cobija and Burrito.

Spanish names keep their accents here, so Toño, Máximo and Corazón appear the way they are written in Mexico.

How to choose chihuahua names

  • Say the name the way you will call it across a room. Two syllables that end in a vowel, such as Paco, Chela, Tito or Nacha, are quick to say and hard to mumble.
  • Check what a Spanish word means before you commit. Fresa is a strawberry and also Mexican slang for someone posh, Chela is a nickname for Graciela and also slang for a beer, and Concha is a sweet roll in Mexico but a rude word in some other countries.
  • Keep the accent marks on the tag and the vet form. Toño without its tilde is a different word, and Gruñón, Corazón and Lulú are stressed on the last syllable because of the mark.
  • An ironic giant works best when it is short. Goliath, Rex, Tank and Oso are easy to call; keep Popocatépetl or Guardaespaldas as the formal name and use a short form at home.
  • For two chihuahuas, choose a pair that belongs together without rhyming, such as Churro and Concha, Trueno and Rayo (thunder and lightning), or Princesa and Duquesa.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Mexican names for a chihuahua?

Short family nicknames are the most natural choice: Paco, Pepe, Chuy, Beto and Memo for a male, Lupita, Chela, Chayo, Rosita and Yoli for a female. Affectionate words work as well, including Chiquita, Corazón, Cielito and Tesoro. All of these are in the list, written with their accents.

Why do people give chihuahuas big, tough names?

The joke is the contrast. A dog that fits in a tote bag and answers to Goliath, Colossus, Bulldozer or El Jefe gets a smile every time. Spanish versions are in the list too, such as Gigante, Tiburón (shark) and Huracán (hurricane).

Are there Nahuatl names in the list?

A few, and only well-known ones. Citlali (star), Xóchitl (flower) and Meztli (moon) are given names from Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs. Many everyday Mexican Spanish words came from Nahuatl as well, including Coyote, Tecolote (owl), Chapulín (grasshopper) and Cacahuate (peanut).

What names suit a chihuahua with a diva streak?

Try Princesa, Reina, Duquesa, La Jefa or Consentida, which means the pampered favorite of the family. For a dog with more spice than polish, Picante, Spitfire, Fierecilla, Traviesa and Dramática all fit.
