Chess Piece Name Generator
Real and invented pieces for every board
Generate chess piece names: the standard six in other languages, like Springer (German knight) and Fou (French bishop), fairy and variant pieces like Amazon, Nightrider and Drunk Elephant, plus invented pieces such as Spymaster, Trebuchet and Mirror Queen for homebrew sets.
About chess piece names
Chess has six standard pieces: the king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and pawn. Players also call the rook a castle and the knight a horse, and those nicknames are close to what other languages say outright. The game reached Europe from Persian and Arabic shatranj, where the queen's ancestor was the ferz, a counselor, and the bishop's was the alfil, an elephant. Spanish still says Alfil, Russian still says Ferz and calls the bishop Slon, the elephant, while German made the same piece a runner (Läufer) and French a jester (Fou).
This list mixes real piece names with invented ones, and the label tells you which is which. A name with a label in parentheses is an attested piece, given with its language, game or variant: Springer (German knight), Hetman (Polish queen), Amazon (fairy chess), Drunk Elephant (chu shogi), Cannon (xiangqi). Fairy chess supplies the combined pieces and leapers, such as the Chancellor, Archbishop, Nightrider, Camel and Grasshopper, and the shogi family supplies generals, dragons and birds in English translation.
Names without a label, 150 of them, are invented for homebrew variants and themed sets: court figures, siege engines, animals, starships and toys. They have no fixed move, so you decide what a Spymaster or a Mirror Queen does.
How to choose chess piece names
- Read the label first. Parentheses name the language, game or variant a piece comes from; no parentheses means the piece was made up for this list and its move is yours to define.
- Name a homebrew piece for how it moves. Fairy chess tradition gives leapers animal names (Camel, Zebra, Giraffe) and gives combined pieces a title (Chancellor, Archbishop, Amazon), so players can guess the move from the name.
- A themed set needs six roles: a royal piece, a strongest piece, a straight-line mover, a diagonal mover, a leaper and a foot soldier. A nautical set could run Flagship, Galleon, Lighthouse, Helmsman, Sea Serpent and Cabin Boy.
- For a story or a game character named after a piece, try the foreign words. Hetman, Vezér, Alfiere, Huszár and Slon sound like titles or names and still mean queen, bishop or knight to anyone who looks them up.
- Before you publish a variant, look your piece names up in a fairy chess reference. Many plain words already stand for one specific move, and reusing them for another confuses experienced players.
Frequently asked questions
What are the chess characters called?
The pieces are the king, queen, rook, bishop, knight and pawn. Each side starts with one king, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights and eight pawns. The rook is often called a castle and the knight a horse, but rook and knight are the names used in the rules.
Why do chess pieces have different names in other languages?
The game traveled from India through Persia and the Arab world to Europe, and each culture translated or reimagined the figures. The shatranj elephant survives as Alfil (Spanish bishop) and Slon (Russian bishop), but became Läufer (German bishop), a runner, and Fou (French bishop), a jester. The rook is a tower in most of Europe, a boat in Russian and a cannon in Bulgarian.
What is a fairy chess piece?
It is any piece that is not in the standard game, used in chess problems and variants. On this list Amazon (fairy chess) moves as queen plus knight, Chancellor (fairy chess) as rook plus knight, Archbishop (fairy chess) as bishop plus knight, and Nightrider (fairy chess) repeats the knight's leap in a straight line.
Which names on the list are made up?
Every name without parentheses, 150 of the 500, such as Spymaster, Trebuchet, Snow Leopard and Mirror Queen. They were written as ideas for homebrew variants and themed sets and have no set move. A few may happen to share a name with a piece in a variant we did not have in mind, which is why they carry no label.
