One Piece has one of the largest named casts in fiction — well over a thousand characters across the East Blue, Paradise, and the New World — and Eiichiro Oda names them with a very particular sense of humor. Most major characters carry a full name plus an epithet printed on their wanted poster: Monkey D. Luffy is "Straw Hat," Roronoa Zoro is "Pirate Hunter," Portgas D. Ace was "Fire Fist," and Marshall D. Teach is "Blackbeard." The mysterious middle initial D. marks members of the Will of D., a lineage that includes Luffy, Ace, Law, Roger, Garp, Dragon, Teach, and Rocks D. Xebec.

Oda's sources are wide. Real pirates supply Roronoa (François l'Olonnais), Eustass Kid (William Kidd), Basil Hawkins (Basil Ringrose and John Hawkins), Capone Bege (Al Capone), and Bartholomew Kuma (Bartholomew Roberts). Marines are named for colors and animals — Sakazuki, Kuzan, and Borsalino go by Akainu (red dog), Aokiji (blue pheasant), and Kizaru (yellow monkey). Big Mom's children are sweets and pastries (Katakuri, Cracker, Pudding, Brulee); Wano samurai use Japanese Edo-era names (Kin'emon, Denjiro, Ashura Doji); and the Donquixote family plays cards and Spanish words.
