About building names

Real buildings get their names from a small set of sources: the family or company that built them (Carnegie Hall, the Woolworth Building), the street or district they stand on (Aldgate Tower), the trade once carried on inside (the Corn Exchange, the Printworks, the Maltings), or a pure marketing coinage chosen by a developer (Pinnacle Plaza, Halcyon Heights).   • Let the suffix match the function: Tower or Spire for a skyscraper, Lofts or Court for housing, Hall or Chambers for civic or legal buildings, Works or Exchange for converted industry.
  • Borrow a local-sounding surname or street name for the first half so the building feels rooted in its city rather than imported from a brochure.
  • Historic-sounding names (The Old Custom House, The Corn Exchange) imply a backstory; use them for buildings that predate the rest of your setting.
  • For a fictional city, name several buildings from the same trade or family so the map hangs together: Harland Works, Harland Hall, Harland Wharf.
  • Check the name is not already used by a well-known building in the real city you are writing about; short surname plus Tower combinations are especially common.
