Generate web browser names for a side project, a fork, a design brief or a fictional product: wayfinding words like Waymark and Northlight, quick mascots like Tabby and Glasswing, window words like Pane and Casement, and retro picks like WebCruiser 2.0.

About browser names

Web browser names have followed a few clear traditions. The best-known tradition borrows from travel and exploration: Navigator, Explorer, Konqueror and later Safari all cast the user as someone setting out across unknown territory. A second tradition is the animal name, as in Firefox and Dolphin, which hands the product a mascot and an icon in one move. More recent browsers tend toward one short word, often a calm or abstract one.

This list has 1,000 invented names in those traditions. There are wayfinding and nautical names (Waymark, Binnacle, Dead Reckoning), quick animals and birds (Tabby, Glasswing, Sandpiper), window and light words (Pane, Casement, Fanlight), motion names (Slipstream), shield and quiet names (Aegis, Hush, Gatehouse), one-syllable brands (Fen, Quill, Wend) and plain product names such as Bracken Browser. For fiction there are retro 1990s titles with version numbers (WebCruiser 2.0, CyberSurf 3), in-universe browsers for sci-fi, cyberpunk and fantasy settings (Tightbeam, Phosphor, Scrying Bowl), tab and bookmark puns (Tabsolutely, URL Grey) and engine or project codenames (Project Kiln, Codename Bittern).

A browser name is said aloud, typed and shrunk to an icon, so favor one that is easy to spell and suggests a simple picture. The names are suggestions only, so do your own checks before you publish anything under one.

How to choose browser names

  • Try the name in the sentence people will really say, "open it in Wren" or "it works in Northlight". Short names with one obvious spelling pass this test best.
  • Pick a name that suggests a picture for the icon. Animals (Kingfisher, Tabby), instruments (Binnacle, Quadrant) and window shapes (Oriel, Porthole) all give a designer something to draw.
  • For period fiction set in the 1990s, use the camel-case compounds with a version number, such as NetSkipper 4.0 or HyperLeap 2.0. For a present-day setting, a single calm word like Glade or Haven reads as more current.
  • A shield or quiet name such as Bulwark or Hush sets a tone and promises nothing by itself. Use one only if the product's behavior backs it up.
  • Before you ship anything under a name, look it up in app stores, code hosting sites and domain registries yourself. Common words are often already in use by other software.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good web browser name?

It is short, easy to spell after hearing it once, and built on one clear image such as travel, a quick animal, a window or light. It should also work as a small icon and in the sentence "open it in ...". Names like Waymark, Wren or Lumen meet all three tests.

Are these the names of real browsers?

They are not meant to be: the list is written as new ideas, not as a directory of existing browsers, and the well-known browsers and engines are left out on purpose. Many entries are ordinary words, so some may already be in use by other software, possibly by a small or old browser too. Look each one up yourself in app stores, code hosting sites and domain registries before using it on a real product.

Which names suit a fictional browser in a story or game?

For a 1990s setting, try the retro titles with version numbers such as WebCruiser 2.0, InfoHighway 3.1 or DialUp Deluxe. Science fiction and cyberpunk settings have Tightbeam, Jumpgate, Phosphor and Black Ice, and fantasy worlds have Scrying Bowl, Farglass and Leyline Reader.

Can I use a name from this list for a browser fork or an extension?

Yes, the names are free ideas for a fork, a side project, a school design brief or an extension. Codenames such as Project Kiln or Codename Bittern suit an internal build, and a plain name such as Bracken Browser or Clover Browser suits a public release. Whether someone else already uses a name is something you need to check yourself.
