Boxing has its own naming language, and it works in layers. At the top is the ring nickname, the part of a fighter's name that fits in quotes on a poster: "The Hitman," "Sugar," "Hands of Stone," "The Body Snatcher." The best nicknames describe how a boxer fights (The Surgeon, The Technician, Krusher), where they are from (The Bronx Bomber, The Clones Cyclone), or an era of the sport (Kid Chocolate, Homicide Hank and The Manassa Mauler all sound like the 1920s and 1930s because that is when newspaper writers were coining them). Boxing gyms are traditionally spare and tough, named after a founder (Kronk, Gleason's), a street, or a piece of ring equipment (Speed Bag Society, Heavy Bag Boxing Co.). Fight cards borrow the rhyme-and-place formula from Ali's era (Rumble in the Jungle, Thrilla in Manila) or use one-word drama titles like Undisputed, Redemption and Trilogy. Promotions and stables lean on words like Ring, Gloves, Rank and Team.
