About Boston Terrier names

The Boston Terrier is one of the few breeds named after an American city. It goes back to Judge, a bulldog and terrier cross that Robert C. Hooper of Boston bought around 1870, and to Judge's mate and their son Eph. The American Kennel Club recognized the breed in 1893, and Massachusetts made it the state dog in 1979.

The biggest group of names comes from the city and the region around it: neighborhoods, streets and landmarks such as Fenway, Copley, Beacon Hill, Southie and Old Ironsides, the Revolution (Revere, Hancock, Lantern), New England's coast and hills (Nantucket, Walden, Katahdin), local food (Chowder, Quahog, Boston Cream) and a few mild accent jokes such as Bahk and Lobstah. Irish given names and surnames, from Seamus and Maeve to Sully and Fitz, reflect the city's Irish heritage.

The dark jacket and white shirt front earned the breed the nickname American Gentleman, so a second large group is formal wear and old-fashioned manners: Bowtie, Cummerbund, Dapper, Jeeves, Percival and Prudence, plus old Boston family names like Cabot and Lowell. The rest suits a small, round-eyed clown of a dog: Bean, Gizmo, Peepers, Snortle and Kidney Bean.

How to choose Boston Terrier names

  • Choose the call name for its sound and the theme for fun. Two syllables with a hard consonant, such as Fenway, Copley, Bowtie or Gizmo, are easy for a dog to pick out.
  • If you are not from New England, check how a place name is said before it goes on the tag. Quincy is Quin-zee in Massachusetts, and Faneuil is usually said Fan-yul or Fan-el.
  • Match the markings. A crisp white chest and blaze suits Tuxedo, Bowtie, Cummerbund or Penguin, while a dog with a lopsided mask might be better as Inkblot, Domino or Checkers.
  • Give a long formal name a short everyday form: Bartholomew becomes Bart, Wigglesworth becomes Wiggs and Saltonstall becomes Salty.
  • For two dogs, pair names from the same corner of the list, such as Revere and Dawes, Chowder and Quahog, Beacon and Copley, or Jeeves and Wooster.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the Boston Terrier called the American Gentleman?

The nickname comes from the markings: a dark coat with a white chest, muzzle band and blaze that looks like a dinner jacket over a shirt front. That is why the list includes formal names such as Tux, Bowtie, Top Hat, Cufflink and Black Tie, and butler and gentleman names like Jeeves, Reginald and Thaddeus.

What are good Boston-themed names for a Boston Terrier?

Start with places: Fenway, Beacon, Copley, Back Bay, Southie, Charlestown and Kenmore. History gives you Revere, Hancock, Dawes, Minuteman and Old Ironsides, and the table gives you Chowder, Scrod, Quahog, Frappe and Boston Cream. For a laugh, Bahk, Chowdah and Wicked Smaht play gently on the local accent.

Where did the breed come from?

From Boston, in the 1870s. The foundation dog was Judge, owned by Robert C. Hooper, and the early dogs were known as Round Heads before the breed took the city's name and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1893. Judge, Hooper, Eph and Roundhead are in the list for owners who like a name with history.

Why are there Irish names in the list?

Boston has had a large Irish community since the nineteenth century, and Irish given names and surnames are part of the city's sound. The list uses them plainly, as names: Seamus, Declan, Brendan, Maeve, Nora and Bridget, and surnames that shorten well, such as Sullivan to Sully, Fitzgerald to Fitz and Murphy to Murph.
