Call names for Cairn Terriers, led by the breed's home in the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye: places like Raasay, Cuillin and Glen Etive, stone words like Scree and Gabbro, Gaelic words with their meanings, and coat, digger and Oz names such as Tousle, Wheaten, Burrow and Toto.

About Cairn Terrier names

The Cairn Terrier comes from the Scottish Highlands and the Isle of Skye, where rough-coated terriers were sent into cairns, the piles of stones on Highland hillsides, to bolt foxes and otters. Before the name was settled in the early 1910s, the breed was shown as a short-haired Skye terrier. The list starts at home: Skye names such as Storr, Cuillin, Sligachan and Quiraing, Highland lochs and hills, and stone words from Scree and Gabbro to Chuckie, a Scots word for a pebble.

Glen names are a strand of their own, from plain Glen to Glen Affric, Glen Etive and Glen Lyon. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a different breed, from Ireland. Scottish given names sit beside them: boys such as Hamish, Lachie and Sorley and girls such as Mairi, Elspeth and Jinty. Each Gaelic word carries its meaning in parentheses: Abhag (terrier), Molach (shaggy), Beag (small).

The rest describes the dog. Coat names cover the harsh, shaggy jacket (Scruff, Tousle, Bristle) and the breed's colors (Wheaten, Cream, Red Brindle, Grey Brindle). Earth-dog names suit a digger: Burrow, Delve, Howk, Mowdie. There is a small share of shortbread and oatcake names, big-dog jokes such as Claymore and Kraken, and an Oz share led by Toto, who was played in the 1939 film by a Cairn named Terry.

How to choose Cairn Terrier names

  • Pick one or two clear syllables for everyday calling, such as Corrie, Scruff, Mairi or Tavish, and keep a long one like Corrieshalloch or Rumbledethumps for the paperwork.
  • Say a Highland or Gaelic name aloud before you commit, and find out how it is said at home. Eilidh is AY-lee and Kingussie is King-YOO-see, which is not what the spelling suggests.
  • A Cairn's coat can change shade as the dog matures, and brindles are known for it. A color name such as Wheaten or Cinder may not fit forever; a place name like Rona or Storr always will.
  • Avoid names that sound like the cues you plan to teach. Stane is close to stay and Sett is close to sit, which is funny for a week and confusing after that.
  • For two Cairns, choose a pair that belongs together without rhyming: Toto and Dorothy, Heather and Bracken, Mustard and Dandie, Cul Mor and Cul Beag, or Loon and Quine, the Doric words for a boy and a girl.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Scottish names for a Cairn Terrier?

Short place names from the breed's home make strong call names: Storr, Elgol and Torrin from Skye, Raasay and Rona from the islands beside it, or Maree, Etive and Slioch from the mainland Highlands. Given names work too, such as Hamish, Ranald, Mairi and Effie, and so do landscape words like Corrie, Brae, Strath and Skerry.

Does the list have glen names for a Cairn Terrier?

Yes. Plain Glen is here with Glennie and Wee Glen, and so are real Highland glens such as Glen Affric, Glen Nevis, Glen Torridon and Glen Sligachan on Skye. Gleann, the Gaelic word behind glen, is in the list with its meaning. The Glen of Imaal Terrier is a separate breed from County Wicklow in Ireland, so its owners may prefer an Irish list.

Which names come from The Wizard of Oz?

Toto is the best-known Cairn on screen: in the 1939 film he was played by a female Cairn Terrier named Terry. Both names are in the list, along with Dorothy, Auntie Em, Kansas, Twister, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Glinda, Munchkin, Emerald City and Yellow Brick, and props and places such as Ruby Slippers, Silver Shoes, Gingham, Oil Can and Storm Cellar. A few come from L. Frank Baum's later Oz books, such as Ozma, Scraps, Tik-Tok, Billina and Shaggy Man.

What do the Gaelic names mean?

Each Scottish Gaelic word carries its meaning in parentheses, for example Cù Beag (little dog), Càrn (cairn, a heap of stones), Sionnach (fox), Broc (badger) and Ròmach (hairy, shaggy). Call the dog by the word alone and keep the meaning as the story behind it. Unfamiliar names without parentheses are mostly real places, such as Clava, Camster and Corrimony, which are all sites of ancient cairns, or Scots words like Howk, to dig, and Mowdie, a mole.
