Boars have a surprisingly deep bench of named ancestors. Norse myth gives Gullinbursti, Freyr's golden-bristled boar, and Hildisvini, the battle-swine Freyja rides; Welsh legend has Twrch Trwyth, the king-turned-boar Arthur hunts across Wales, and Ysgithyrwyn, the White Tusk. Greece supplies the Calydonian and Erymanthian boars, Hindu tradition the boar avatar Varaha, and Gaul the boar god Moccus. Anglo-Saxon warriors wore boar crests on their helmets, which is why names like Everard, Eberhard and Everett all descend from eber, the old word for boar.

Ordinary language is the second source. Hunters in France call a young male a ragot and an old loner a solitaire; Germans say Keiler for a tusker and Frischling for a piglet; Russians say kaban, Japanese inoshishi, Persians goraz, Armenians varaz. Striped wild piglets are nicknamed humbugs in Britain and uribo in Japan, both of which make charming names for a young boar.

For an original name, think about what a boar actually is: bristles, tusks, mud, acorns and oak mast, thickets and fen. Words like Bracken, Truffle, Russet, Flint and Wallow suit a realistic boar, while compounds such as Ironsnout, Mudcrusher or Rootbreaker fit a war-boar mount in a game.
