Generate Ayleid names for the Wild Elves of The Elder Scrolls: personal names like Maladuul and Varlethel, dynasty names like Belloran Vanur, sorcerer-kings like Moranduul the Bright Tyrant, and city-states like Karandawik and Sel Malatar, invented in the style of Umaril and Nenalata.

About Ayleid names

The Ayleids, or Wild Elves, ruled Cyrodiil from the White-Gold Tower long before the Empire, each city-state under its own sorcerer-king, until the slave rebellion led by Alessia broke their power. The Elder Scrolls leaves only a short roll of their names: Umaril the Unfeathered, Laloriaran Dynar, the last king of Nenalata, the fire-king Hadhuul, and Anumaril. This list is invented in that style, with those few kept as reference points.

The sound is not the smooth Summerset sound of Altmer names such as Ancano or Elenwen. Ayleid names carry heavier vowels and odd turns: a doubled u, endings in -aril and -uul, a th or dh in the middle. The list has single names for men and women (Maladuul, Varlethel), two-part names with a dynasty name after the pattern of Laloriaran Dynar (Belloran Vanur), and sorcerer-kings with an epithet in the manner of 'the Unfeathered' (Moranduul the Bright Tyrant).

About a fifth of the entries are places. Ayleid ruins in Oblivion have one-word names like Nenalata and Miscarcand or two-word names like Garlas Agea and Sardavar Leed, and the city-states here follow both shapes: Karandawik, Vabriastare, Rilsand Tarn, Sel Malatar. Many entries borrow syllables from Ayleidoon words seen in the games, but no meaning is claimed for any invented name.

How to choose Ayleid names

  • Give a sorcerer-king an epithet that hints at a deed or a flaw. Serethuul the Kinslayer and Lorinde the Heartless tell a player what to expect before the character speaks.
  • Pair a long given name with a short dynasty name. Tamriloria Ondar and Wendiraur Varlais keep the rhythm of Laloriaran Dynar, where the second name is the brisk one.
  • Name the city-state before its ruler. A court reads as real when the king, the heirs and the rival lords all point to the same place, as King Malathir of Sercatar does.
  • Use a place name for a ruin as well as a living city. Anything in the list of city-states can be a dungeon on a Cyrodiil map, with the personal names for the dead who still guard it.
  • For a playable character, put an Ayleid name on a High Elf or Wood Elf with Wild Elf ancestry. Lore has Ayleid refugees settling in Valenwood, so the heritage is easy to justify.

Frequently asked questions

What do Ayleid names sound like?

They sound older and stranger than the High Elf names of Summerset. Expect long vowels, a doubled u, and endings such as -aril, -uul, -aran and -ethel, as in Varlaril, Nornaluul, Pelinaran and Merethel from this list. The pattern comes from the few Ayleids the games name, above all Umaril, Hadhuul and Laloriaran Dynar.

Are these names from the games?

Only a handful are: Umaril the Unfeathered, Laloriaran Dynar, Hadhuul, Anumaril, Gordhaur the Shaper and Haromir of Copper and Tea among the people, and Nenalata, Miscarcand, Garlas Agea and Sardavar Leed among the places. Everything else is invented in the same style, and no invented name should be read as lore or given an Ayleidoon meaning.

How are Ayleid cities named?

The ruins in Oblivion use two shapes. One is a single flowing word, which this list follows with names such as Karandawik, Ondalata and Vabriastare. The other is a pair of short words, as in Rilsand Tarn, Melavar Leed and Garlas Varlan.

Can I play an Ayleid in The Elder Scrolls?

Not as a race of their own, since the Ayleids are a lost people by the time of the games. Players use these names for High Elf or Wood Elf characters with Wild Elf heritage, for tabletop campaigns set in the First Era, and for the kings and ruins of their own stories.
