Australian nicknames standing on their own, each with the name it comes from: Bazza (Barry), Shazza (Sharon), Davo (David), Thommo (Thompson), Smithy (Smith) and Macca for the Mc and Mac names, plus trade names like Sparky and classics like Bluey.

About this generator

Australians are fond of shortening names, and the result is usually friendlier and funnier than the original. A first name with an r in the middle often turns into a -zza form, so Barry is Bazza, Sharon is Shazza and Kerry is Kezza, and each of those clips again to Baz, Shaz and Kez. Other names take an -o: Davo, Johnno, Stevo. Surnames get the same treatment, which gives Thommo for Thompson, Hendo for Henderson and Gibbo for Gibson, or they take a -y, as in Smithy, Jonesy and Fitzy. Anyone whose surname starts with Mc or Mac can expect to be Macca.

Every entry here is a nickname on its own with its source in parentheses, so you can scan for your own name or surname. A smaller group has no source name at all: the old ironic classics (Bluey for a redhead, Tiny for the biggest bloke in the room), trade names like Sparky and Chippy, and what people call each other when no name is needed, from Mate to Old Mate.

Many of these forms are shared with Britain, Ireland and New Zealand. They are listed because they are common in Australia, and a nickname is one entry even when several names lead to it.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Look for your own name in the parentheses. If it is not there, apply the pattern: a name with an r tends to take -zza, and a short name or surname takes -o or -y.
  • A nickname is given, not chosen. In a story, let a workmate or a teammate hand it out in the first week, and let the character put up with it.
  • The clipped forms (Baz, Shaz, Loz) are the quickest to say, while the -zza and -o forms are the ones that sound most Australian. Many people answer to both.
  • Ironic nicknames only work with affection. Bluey, Lofty and Tiny are traditional, but make sure the person wearing one would laugh too.
  • When two people in a group share a first name, Australians often split them by surname: one stays Davo and the other becomes Thommo or Smithy.

Frequently asked questions

What are some funny Aussie nicknames?

The -zza forms tend to get the biggest laugh from visitors: Bazza, Shazza, Gazza, Kezza and Muzza. Close behind are the surname forms such as Thommo, Hendo and Chappo, the ironic classics like Bluey for a redhead, and inherited pairings such as Chalky (White) and Swampy (Marsh).

How do I work out the Australian nickname for my name?

Check the parentheses in the list first. If your name is missing, the usual routes are to clip it to one syllable and add -o (Davo, Jordo), -y or -ie (Smithy, Lachie), or -zza when there is an r to replace (Darren to Dazza, Lauren to Lozza). Surnames follow the same rules, and Mc and Mac names often give Macca.

Why do so many Australian nicknames end in -o or -zza?

Shortening a word and adding -o or -ie is a general habit of Australian English, the same one that produces arvo for afternoon and servo for service station. Names simply get the same treatment. The -zza ending appears where a name has an r after the first vowel: the r is dropped and replaced, so Barry becomes Bazza and Terry becomes Tezza.

Are these nicknames only used in Australia?

No. Forms like Gazza, Smithy and Chalky are also common in Britain, Ireland and New Zealand, and several of the inherited surname pairings are shared with older British service slang. The list gathers forms that are common in Australia without claiming them for one country.
