Browse 500 American Dad names, opening with the Smith family, Roger, Klaus, the neighbors, CIA colleagues and a few of Roger's personas. After those come new names in the show's register: personas with a job attached like Braxton Pell, Wedding DJ, Langley Falls neighbors like Doug and Pam Whitlock, desk colleagues like Deputy Director Halloran, students, teachers, talking pets and offworld names.

About American Dad names

American Dad, created by Seth MacFarlane, Mike Barker and Matt Weitzman, began on Fox in 2005 and later moved to TBS. It is set in the fictional town of Langley Falls, Virginia, and its family has about the plainest surname in America: Stan, Francine, Hayley and Steve Smith. Around them the names stay short and ordinary too, from Jeff Fischer and Greg Corbin to school friends known simply as Snot, Barry and Toshi.

The show's own naming gag is the persona. Roger's disguises carry full names that are oddly specific and often come with a job, such as Jeannie Gold, Kevin Ramage and Sidney Huffman. This list keeps to personas with clean names and leaves out the cruder ones, along with the real people the show portrays.

The list opens with names from the show, given as names only and not as a full cast list. Everything after Chimdale is new and written in the same register: personas with a trade, Langley Falls neighbors and block-party couples, CIA colleagues known by rank and surname, students with lunchroom nicknames, teachers, talking pets and lab accidents, offworld names and local places.

How to choose American Dad names

  • For a persona, pair a first name that is a little too polished with a job that is a little too narrow: Braxton Pell, Wedding DJ, or Candace Moreau, Life Coach for Horses. The narrower the trade, the better the name lands.
  • Neighbors sound right as two first names and one surname, like Doug and Pam Whitlock, or as the thing the whole street calls them, like The Pruitts with the Trampoline.
  • Office names are a rank and a surname with no first name: Deputy Director Halloran, Analyst Dwyer. For desk comedy, swap the rank for a department, as in Jenkins from Payroll.
  • A school nickname in the Snot manner is one blunt word in front of a normal surname: Gravy Dolan, Lint Abbott. Keep it about habits and lunch, not about how someone looks.
  • For a visitor from space, follow the joke of an alien called Roger and set a plain human name beside a strange one: Hatchmate Carl next to Zandreel.

Frequently asked questions

Which names on this list are actual American Dad characters?

The list opens with names from the show: the Smiths, Roger, Klaus Heisler, Jeff Fischer, Avery Bullock, Principal Lewis, Snot, Barry, Toshi, Greg Corbin and Terry Bates, then more neighbors, relatives and CIA colleagues, some of Roger's personas such as Ricky Spanish and Raider Dave, and four places. It is a selection, not a complete cast list. Everything after Chimdale is new and written in the same styles.

What are the names of the main characters on American Dad?

The family is Stan Smith, Francine Smith, Hayley Smith and Steve Smith, with Roger the alien and Klaus Heisler the goldfish. Hayley's husband is Jeff Fischer, Stan's boss is Avery Bullock, and Steve's friends are Snot, Barry and Toshi.

What are some of Roger's persona names?

Roger has used a great many disguise names over the years. This list includes a handful with clean names: Ricky Spanish, Jeannie Gold, Kevin Ramage, Sidney Huffman, Dr. Penguin, Raider Dave, Tearjerker, Genevieve Vavance, Braff Zacklin, Max Jets, Scotch Bingington and Tom Yabo. The cruder ones, and those that play on a real celebrity's name, are left out on purpose. For a new one in the same manner, try Chet Ravenswood, Riverboat Magician.

Can I use these names for fan fiction, a trivia team or a game?

The new names are ordinary names, job titles and jokes, written for that kind of use: fan scripts, tabletop characters, trivia teams and sketches. The show's own characters belong to their owners, so treat them the way fan work usually does. This page is a fan resource with no connection to the show or its networks.
