Browse 500 Family Guy names, opening with the Griffins, the Spooner Street neighbors, the Channel 5 news team and other characters and places from Quahog. After those come new Quahog-style names: Rhode Island townsfolk like Gary Medeiros, old-money Newport relatives like Winthrop Silverschmidt, news anchors, school staff and clean gag names in the Buzz Killington mold.

About family Guy names

Family Guy, created by Seth MacFarlane, first aired on Fox in 1999 and is set in the fictional town of Quahog, Rhode Island, named after a New England clam. MacFarlane studied at the Rhode Island School of Design, and the show's names keep a local, everyday sound: Griffin, Swanson, Brown, Goldman and Tucker are surnames you could find on any American street, attached to sitcom first names like Peter, Lois, Joe, Bonnie and Tom.

The comedy names sit on top of that plain base. Lois's wealthy Newport family is called Pewterschmidt, the neighbor is Glenn Quagmire, and minor characters are often named for the joke they carry, such as Buzz Killington, or simply described: Evil Monkey, Ernie the Giant Chicken, New Brian, Death. The spin-off The Cleveland Show moved Cleveland Brown to Stoolbend, Virginia, and brought in the Tubbs family.

This list starts with characters and places from the show, given as names only. Real people who appear on the show as themselves or as parodies are left out, and so are the cruder joke names. The remaining names were written to the same recipes: Rhode Island townsfolk, old-money relatives, local news teams, school staff, town jobs, talking animals, businesses and nursery rivals.

How to choose family Guy names

  • For a new neighbor, use a short sitcom first name and a surname common in Rhode Island, where Irish, Italian, Portuguese and French-Canadian families are all well represented: Russ Botelho, Doreen McNamara, Lou Pagliarini.
  • An old-money character needs a stiff first name and a surname that sounds like a metal or a bank statement, in the Pewterschmidt manner: Beatrice Ledgerwood, Mortimer Cashwell IV.
  • News anchors on the show have punchy two-beat names like Tom Tucker, so alliteration works: Chet Chandler, Lana Lockwood.
  • A gag name should explain the character the moment it is spoken. Colonel Longstory and Professor Tangent need no introduction, which is the whole point.
  • Keep joke names clean if the script or stream is going anywhere public. The description style (The Polite Seagull, A Surprisingly Calm Bear) gets a laugh without anything rude.

Frequently asked questions

Which names on this list are actual Family Guy characters?

The list opens with names from the show: the Griffins, the Pewterschmidts, Glenn Quagmire, the Browns, the Swansons, the Goldmans, the Channel 5 news team and townsfolk such as Dr. Elmer Hartman, Bruce and Consuela, then a few names from The Cleveland Show and places like Spooner Street and The Drunken Clam. It is a selection, not a complete cast list, and it leaves out real people the show portrays. Everything after Quahog Mini-Mart was written in the same styles and is not meant to be a character from the show, though a plain name or place can match a minor one by chance.

What are the names of the main characters on Family Guy?

The family is Peter Griffin, Lois Griffin, Meg Griffin, Chris Griffin, Stewie Griffin and the dog Brian Griffin. Their neighbors and friends include Glenn Quagmire, Cleveland Brown, Joe Swanson and Bonnie Swanson, and the Channel 5 news names include Tom Tucker, Diane Simmons, Joyce Kinney, Tricia Takanawa and Ollie Williams.

What is Stewie's full name?

On the show his full name is given as Stewart Gilligan Griffin, and it is in the list with the rest of the family. For a new character in the same register, try a pompous nursery title such as Lord Bartholomew of the Playpen or Little Lord Tantrum.

Can I use these names for fan fiction, a parody or a game?

The new names are ordinary names, job titles and jokes, written for that kind of use: fan scripts, tabletop characters, trivia teams and sketches. The show's own characters belong to their owners, so treat them the way fan work usually does. This page is a fan resource and has no connection to the show or the network.
