About agile team names
Agile team names get used constantly: in the Jira board title, the Slack channel, the sprint review slide, the on-call rota. That daily exposure is why the best ones are short, easy to say out loud and survive being typed into a channel name without punctuation. Real engineering organisations tend to land on one of three styles. Pun names built on scrum vocabulary (Burndown Brigade, The Backlog Busters, Stand-Up Comedians) are popular with newer teams and instantly tell outsiders what the team does. Developer in-jokes (Null Pointers, Merge Conflicts, Works On My Machine) signal a shared culture and age well. Codename-style names (Falcon Squad, Atlas, Orion) are the choice of larger orgs that want a neutral label a team can keep even when its product area changes.
A fourth style deserves a mention because it is everywhere in practice: alliterating the team's domain with an animal, as in Payments Penguins, Checkout Cheetahs or Platform Pandas. It is a little silly, but it makes org charts readable and gives the team an easy mascot for stickers and emoji.

Tips for choosing a name
- Say the name as a Slack channel before you commit: #payments-penguins and #team-atlas are easy; anything with an apostrophe, slash or question mark will be mangled by every tool you use.
- Avoid naming the team after its current project or product. Teams outlive projects, and 'Checkout Team' becomes awkward the day it picks up subscriptions too. Codenames and mascots stay valid.
- If you work in a multi-team org, coordinate themes: one tribe picks birds of prey, another picks constellations, and every squad name then tells people which group it belongs to.
- Let the team vote with a quick dot-vote or fist-of-five rather than letting the scrum master pick. A name the team chose gets used; a name that was assigned gets ignored.
- Check that the joke lands for non-engineers too. Stakeholders will see the name in demos, so puns like 'Ship Happens' are fine while very niche references may need explaining every sprint.

What makes a good scrum team name?
Short, pronounceable, and pleasant to repeat. It should work as a Jira board title and a Slack channel, not depend on the current project, and be something every member is comfortable saying in front of stakeholders. Humour is welcome but should not need a footnote.
Should agile team names be funny or serious?
Either works, and many orgs mix both. Puns and in-jokes build identity on small, self-organising teams; neutral codenames scale better across dozens of squads and survive reorganisations. A common compromise is a neutral codename with a funny mascot or emoji.
Can I use these names for sprints or releases as well?
