Abstract Name Generator

Abstract names are the empty vessels of branding: words with no prior meaning that the company fills over time. Kodak, Xerox, Rolex, Häagen-Dazs and Exxon were all built this way, and the approach endures because a coined word is far easier to trademark and to register as a .com than a real one. The trade-off is that an abstract name says nothing on day one, so it needs a clear tagline and some marketing spend before it carries meaning.

Good abstract names follow a few phonetic rules. They are usually two or three syllables, start with a hard or distinctive consonant (k, v, z, q, x) when they want to sound technical and with softer sounds (l, m, n, s) when they want to sound warm. They read the same way on first sight, so avoid ambiguous clusters like 'gh' or doubled vowels that could be pronounced two ways. Endings matter: -ix, -ex and -ant feel precise and engineered, -a, -ia and -elle feel consumer-friendly, and -o feels playful and Italian.
