2 Name Ambigram Generator

An ambigram is a piece of lettering that still reads as a word when you turn it upside down, and a two-name ambigram is the tattoo-shop favorite: one name reads normally, and a second name appears when the design is rotated 180 degrees. Couples, parents of two children, and twins use them because the pairing itself tells a story. The catch is that not every pair of names is easy to draw. Ambigram artists look for names of similar length, and for letters that can be redrawn as their upside-down partners: an n flips into a u, a b becomes a q, a d becomes a p, an h can pass as a y, and s, o, x, z, l and i are their own inverses.

The simplest ambigrams are palindromic names such as Anna, Hannah, Otto, Ava and Elle, which only need symmetrical letterforms to work. Word pairs like Love / Hate, Faith / Hope and Mom / Dad are popular precisely because they are short and roughly the same length. Longer or unequal pairs (Sofia / Max, for example) can still be drawn, but the artist has to hide extra letters inside flourishes, which makes the design busier and harder to read.
