A Jewish name tells you which diaspora a family came through. Ashkenazi families from Central and Eastern Europe carry German- and Slavic-built surnames: occupational (Schneider, Kantor, Melamed), ornamental (Goldberg, Rosenthal, Blumenfeld), patronymic (Abramowitz, Jacobson) or priestly (Cohen, Katz, Levi, Segal). Their given names mix Biblical Hebrew (Avraham, Rivka) with Yiddish forms like Mendel, Zalman, Hersh, Feige and Golda, and observant families often use double names such as Yehuda Leib or Chaya Mushka. Sephardi families descended from Spain and Portugal use surnames like Toledano, Abravanel, Cardozo and Benveniste, plus Moroccan ones like Ohana, Dahan, Elbaz and Azoulay; Mizrahi families from Iraq, Yemen and Iran carry Sasson, Shamash, Tzadok, Sharabi, Kashani and Hakakian.

Israel added a third layer. After 1948 many immigrants Hebraized their names, turning Goldberg into Har-Paz and Perelman into Peri, so modern Israelis are often Barak, Golan, Shaked or Ben-David. Their first names are short and drawn from nature and landscape: Noam, Itai, Yuval, Noa, Shira, Rotem, Maayan. American Jewish families show the same drift, from Irving and Sylvia in the 1930s to Ethan and Talia today, usually with the surname unchanged.
