Fictional WNBA-style team names that pair real cities with singular nicknames in the league's own register, from Denver Timberline and Cincinnati Paddlewheel to Nashville Encore. Made for expansion talk, created teams in basketball games and sports fiction.

About WNBA team names

If you came for the real names: the WNBA's clubs have included the New York Liberty, Las Vegas Aces, Seattle Storm, Minnesota Lynx, Phoenix Mercury, Indiana Fever, Chicago Sky, Connecticut Sun, Atlanta Dream, Dallas Wings, Los Angeles Sparks, Washington Mystics and Golden State Valkyries, with the Toronto Tempo and Portland Fire among the newer additions. The league is growing, so check its own site for the lineup in any given season.

Read that list again and the house style shows. Most WNBA nicknames are singular nouns taken from the sky, the weather, heat and spirit, where the older men's leagues lean on plurals. Every name in this generator is fictional and follows that pattern: a real metro area or state plus a singular or abstract nickname, such as Denver Timberline, Cincinnati Paddlewheel or Nashville Encore. None is meant to be a real club, past or present, and none uses a group of people as a mascot.

The list mixes six styles: sky and light, weather and wind, heat and motion, character words, music and local culture, and landscape. Use the names for expansion debates, created teams in NBA 2K and other basketball sims, and sports fiction.

How to choose WNBA team names

  • Give the nickname a local reason. Cincinnati Paddlewheel, Nashville Encore and Louisville Homestretch work because each one points at something the city is already known for.
  • Say it the way an arena announcer would: "your Denver Timberline". A singular nickname takes no S, so test that it still sounds like a team and not a place or a product.
  • Check how it shortens. Fans will find a short form for the Boston Nor'easter within a week, so make sure it is one you like.
  • Building a whole expansion class? Mix the styles so the standings do not read like a weather report: one sky name, one character word, one local landmark.
  • Planning to use a name in public or on merchandise? Search it yourself first. Semi-pro, college and minor league clubs in many sports have used a great many nicknames.

Frequently asked questions

What are the names of the real WNBA teams?

Clubs that have played in the league include the Liberty, Aces, Storm, Lynx, Mercury, Fever, Sky, Sun, Dream, Wings, Sparks, Mystics, Valkyries, Tempo and Fire, and the introduction above gives each with its city. The league is adding teams, so its own site is the place to confirm the lineup for a given season. Everything in the generator itself is fictional.

Are any of these names real teams?

No name here is meant to be one. The list was drafted to stay away from WNBA nicknames past and present, but many leagues in many sports have used short singular names, so an overlap with some club somewhere can happen. Search a name yourself before you use it in public.

Why are most of the nicknames singular?

Because that is how the league has tended to name its clubs: Liberty, Sky, Sun, Fever and Dream are each a single thing or idea, not a plural mascot. The list keeps the same habit with names such as Chicago Gust, Atlanta Resurgence and Seattle Rainfall.

Which names suit a created team in a basketball game?

Pick a nickname that suggests a logo and colors at a glance. Tucson Stardust, Miami Coral and Pittsburgh Ember each hand you a palette before you pick a jersey. For a relocation story, state names such as Colorado Timberline leave room for a whole region to adopt the team.
