Generate Touhou-style names for fan characters: Japanese full names with poetic family names like Sayo Harusame and Hayate Karasuba, Western names like Lavender Almanac, and single-name fairies and youkai, set beside cast names such as Reimu Hakurei and Cirno.

About Touhou names

The Touhou Project is a long-running series of bullet-hell shooting games set in Gensokyo, a hidden land where youkai, gods, ghosts, fairies and a few humans live. Most characters have a Japanese full name whose family name is a rare, evocative word tied to what the character is: Kirisame is drizzle, Izayoi is the sixteenth night of the lunar month, Yakumo is eight clouds. English-speaking fans write the given name first, so this list does too: Reimu Hakurei, not Hakurei Reimu.

There are three other patterns. The residents of the Scarlet Devil Mansion and a few others carry Western names built from a given name and a plain English word, such as Remilia Scarlet and Patchouli Knowledge. Fairies and small youkai often have a single name or a two-word English one, like Cirno, Rumia and Sunny Milk. Characters tied to ancient clans keep the old form with no, clan first, as in Fujiwara no Mokou.

About seventy members of the series cast are set among roughly 430 new names in the same styles, spread over shrine maidens, magicians, tengu, kappa, ghosts, oni, gods, moon dwellers, fairies and tsukumogami. The new names are for fan characters and are not official. Each Japanese one is built from real words, such as Sayo Harusame (spring rain) and Akari Tomoshibi (lamplight).

How to choose Touhou names

  • Choose the species first, then a family name that hints at it. Wind and feather words suit tengu (Hayate Karasuba, Konoha Kurobane), water and machine words suit kappa (Kiri Haguruma), and sake and gourd words suit oni (Hisago Sennari).
  • Keep the given name short. Two or three syllables such as Sayo, Kiku or Tae sit well in front of a long family name, which is how most of the cast is built.
  • For a Western-style character, pair a herb, flower or old-fashioned given name with one plain English noun about what she does: Lavender Almanac for a librarian, Dahlia Marionette for a doll maker.
  • Give fairies and small youkai less name, not more. A two-word English name tied to weather or a season (Icicle Chime, Dawn Chorus) or a single word (Kinako, Yukinko) marks a minor character at a glance.
  • The list gives readings only, so pick the kanji yourself, and search the finished name before you post your character in case another fan work already uses it.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a name sound like Touhou?

An ordinary given name joined to a family name that is a real but rare word about the character's nature. A ghost might be Sayoko Hitodama, a moon dweller Koyomi Tachimachi, a tengu reporter Suzume Kawaraban. Western names follow the same idea in English, as in Verbena Grimoire or Winifred Frostbell.

Are these official Touhou characters?

About seventy are, including Reimu Hakurei, Marisa Kirisame, Sakuya Izayoi and Cirno, and they are listed so you can hear the style. The rest are new names for fan characters and are not official. No fan-game characters are included. The Touhou Project belongs to Team Shanghai Alice and is named here only to say what the names are for.

Why is the given name written first?

In Japanese the family name comes first, so the heroine is Hakurei Reimu. English-speaking fans usually reverse it, and this list follows that habit. The exceptions are the old clan names with no, such as Mononobe no Futo and the new Sugawara no Umeka, and the Chinese name Hong Meiling, which stay family name first.

Do the Japanese names mean anything?

Yes, the family names are real words. Haguruma is a gear, Hanafubuki is a flurry of falling petals and Tsukimi is moon viewing, so Kiri Haguruma, Yoshino Hanafubuki and Yuzu Tsukimi each say something about the character. The page does not assign kanji, which leaves the exact spelling to you.
