Theatre Company Name Generator

Independent theatre companies name themselves very differently from the buildings they play in. A venue is usually a Theatre Royal, a Playhouse or a dead playwright; a company is a phrase with an attitude. The most durable pattern is a piece of stagecraft vocabulary that outsiders half-recognise: Ghost Light, Fourth Wall, Green Room, Black Box, Footlights, Curtain Call, Understudy. Next come lifted Shakespearean scraps (Bare Bodkin, Mortal Coil, Exit Pursued, Such Stuff, Seven Ages) and pairs joined by an ampersand, which has become the signature of the devised and physical theatre scene: Tooth & Nail, Plank & Passion, Hammer & Tongs, Sock & Buskin.

The suffix then tells the audience what kind of company you are. Players and Dramatic Society signal community or amateur; Theatre Company and Rep sound established and text-based; Ensemble and Collective promise devised or actor-led work; Productions and Theatricals lean commercial; Project, Lab and Workshop suggest new writing and development. Touring companies often drop the suffix entirely and trade on a memorable phrase or an object (Suitcase Theatre, Paper Boat, Shipping Container Theatre) that doubles as a logo.
