Generate Tamaranean names in the style of Starfire's people from DC Comics: apostrophe-laden royal names like Koriand'r and Komand'r, warrior names like Galfore and Karras, and the translated fire-and-star epithets Tamaraneans use as hero names on Earth.

About tamaranean names

Tamaranean names come from the DC Comics planet Tamaran, home of Starfire, and the royal house sets the template: Koriand'r, her sister Komand'r, brother Ryand'r and parents Myand'r and Luand'r all end in -and'r, with the apostrophe marking a swallowed vowel before the final r. Those names also translate into English epithets, which is why Koriand'r is Starfire, Komand'r is Blackfire and Ryand'r has been both Wildfire and Darkfire; a Tamaranean hero name is usually a literal rendering of the birth name.

Outside the palace the apostrophe is optional. Galfore, Karras, Kalista and Taryia are plain two- and three-syllable names built on hard consonants (k, r, d, th) and open vowels, the Titans TV series added Faddei, and the comics gave us Ph'yzzon and the goddess X'Hal, showing the apostrophe can sit right after a leading consonant instead. Tamaraneans traditionally carry no family names; rank is shown by title (Grand Ruler, Princess) and lineage by reputation.

The list below mixes all of these forms: a limited set of -and'r royals, mid-name and leading apostrophes, unadorned warrior names, softer -ia and -ei endings, and a handful of fire-and-light aliases a Tamaranean might adopt on Earth. Pick the register that fits your character's station.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Save the -and'r ending for royalty or nobility; if every Tamaranean in your story has it, the Koriand'r family stops feeling special.
  • Use the apostrophe once per name at most and keep it pronounceable: Koriand'r is said "kor-ee-AND-er", so the mark should stand for a dropped vowel, not a random pause.
  • Pair the Tamaranean birth name with a translated epithet (Starfire, Wildfire) if the character operates on Earth, and make the two connect in meaning.
  • Match the name to the planet's culture: Tamaran is a warrior society with a monarchy and X'Hal worship, so names should sound forceful and short rather than delicate.
  • If the character hides among humans, give them an anglicized cover name the way Koriand'r uses Kory Anders: keep the first syllable and pick a plain surname.

Frequently asked questions

Why do Tamaranean names have an apostrophe?

In the comics the apostrophe marks a swallowed vowel, particularly in the royal -and'r ending shared by Koriand'r, Komand'r, Ryand'r, Myand'r and Luand'r. Not every Tamaranean name uses it; Galfore, Karras and Kalista do not.

What does Koriand'r mean and how does Starfire get her name?

Starfire is the English rendering of Koriand'r, and Tamaranean heroes generally use a translation of their birth name: Komand'r becomes Blackfire and Ryand'r Wildfire (later Darkfire). The list includes original epithets built the same way.

Do Tamaraneans have surnames?

Not in canon. They are known by a single name plus title or family relation, so a full introduction would be "Koriand'r, Princess of Tamaran" rather than a first and last name. Half-Tamaranean Mar'i Grayson uses her human father's surname.

Can I use these names for a Teen Titans or DC fan fiction or tabletop character?

Yes. Canon names such as Koriand'r belong to DC, but the original names here are free to use for fan fiction, DC Universe Online characters, Mutants and Masterminds games or your own alien royalty.
