Generate swim team names for summer-league, school, club and masters squads: banner names like Larkmoor Marlins and Tidal Waves, relay names like Four Strokes No Jokes, stroke puns like Backstroke of Genius and little-kid names like Mighty Minnows.

About swim team names

Swim teams tend to carry two kinds of name. The first goes on the banner, the cap and the heat sheet: a pool, neighborhood or school followed by a mascot, as in Larkmoor Marlins or Quillhaven Otters. Dolphins, Barracudas, Stingrays, Sharks and Marlins are the favorites, but anything fast and aquatic works, and wave names such as Tidal Waves, Aqua Force and Rip Current do the same job without an animal. The places in this list are invented, so swap in your own pool or town.

The second kind is the joke a relay or a practice group prints on a T-shirt. Those lean on the sport's own vocabulary: strokes and turns (Backstroke of Genius, No Fly Zone, Flip the Script), the individual medley (IM Possible), starts and finishes (Take Your Marks, Out-Touched), and the daily life of chlorine, goggles and early alarms (Eau de Chlorine, Raccoon Eyes, 5 AM Club). Relay names for four have a group of their own, led by Four Strokes No Jokes.

Close to half the list is mascot and club names and the rest is wordplay. It also covers masters and adult lap swimmers, open-water squads, charity swims and the youngest groups, where Guppies, Minnows and Tadpoles never go out of style.

How to choose swim team names

Say the name the way an announcer would: 'In lane four, the Briarwick Barracudas.' If it is a mouthful over a loudspeaker, shorten it.
Pick a mascot that draws well. A marlin, an otter or a stingray makes a clear cap logo, while an abstract name like Slipstream needs a strong wordmark instead.
Keep the official name plain and save the puns for relays and T-shirts. Larkmoor Marlins can still enter a relay as Four Strokes No Jokes.
For a team of young swimmers, ask them. Names like Mighty Minnows, Splash Pups and Cannonball Kids are easy to vote on and easy to cheer.
Before you order caps, search your league and nearby clubs so you do not share a name or a mascot with the team in the next lane.

Frequently asked questions

What are some cool swim team names?

Cool names tend to be short and fast: Slipstream, Rip Current, Blue Streak, Liquid Lightning and Aqua Force. For a mascot name, pair your pool or town with a quick sea animal, as in Maplewick Makos or Saffron Springs Sailfish.

What are the best names for a relay team?

Relay names usually play on the number four or on the legs of the race. Four Strokes No Jokes, Fearsome Foursome, Fourth Leg Legends, Anchor Management and Clean Exchange are all in the list. A medley relay can also borrow a stroke pun such as Backstroke of Genius.

What should we call a team of young swimmers?

The classics are small water animals: Guppies, Minnows and Tadpoles, or livelier versions such as Giggling Guppies, Tiny Tadpoles and Polliwog Patrol. They also work as names for the youngest practice group inside a bigger team.

Are the pools and towns in these names real?

No, they are made up as stand-ins. Treat Larkmoor, Quillhaven and the rest as placeholders for your own pool, neighborhood or school. An invented name can still match a real place by chance, which is one more reason to use your own.
