Find Studio Ghibli names for characters, spirits, pets and OCs: canon names from Spirited Away, Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle and every Ghibli film, plus original Japanese and European-style names with the same gentle, storybook feel.

About Studio Ghibli names

Studio Ghibli names come in two distinct flavors, and the best original names copy one of them deliberately. Films set in Japan use short, soft, everyday given names with a seasonal or natural feel: Satsuki and Mei (both words for May), Chihiro, Sosuke, Umi, Shizuku, Taeko, Mahito. They are almost always two or three syllables, easy for a child to shout across a field, and paired with plain, real surnames like Kusakabe, Ogino or Tsukishima. Films set in invented European countries reach instead for whimsical, slightly old-fashioned names such as Howl, Sophie, Calcifer, Sheeta, Pazu, Arrietty, Kiki and Earwig.

The third group is the spirits. Ghibli spirit names are either descriptive (No-Face, River Spirit, Forest Spirit, the soot sprites) or drawn straight from Japanese folklore (kodama, tanuki, Yubaba, whose name means "bathhouse witch"). Haku's real name, Nigihayami Kohakunushi, shows the longer, ceremonial form a river god might carry.

This generator mixes all three: the full canon roster across every Ghibli feature, original Japanese full names in the same register, European-flavored names for Howl or Laputa style stories, and folklore-based spirit names for the creatures in between. Use it for OCs, pets, D&D characters, Animal Crossing villagers or a baby name shortlist with a Ghibli heart.

How to choose Studio Ghibli names

  • Match the name to the world: a Japanese countryside story wants a name like Kaede Fujimori, while a flying-castle story wants something like Ottilie Brambleside. Mixing the two in one cast rarely sounds right.
  • Keep protagonists short. Nearly every Ghibli lead has a one- to three-syllable given name (Mei, Kiki, Ponyo, Sophie, Howl) so it can be called out loud in a hurry.
  • For spirits and creatures, describe what they are or where they live (the Camphor Tree Guardian, Kodama of the Old Cedar) rather than inventing fantasy gibberish; Ghibli's spirits are named the way villagers would name them.
  • Look for hidden meaning: Satsuki and Mei both mean May, Chihiro means "a thousand fathoms," and Yubaba steals that name and shortens it to Sen. A name that can be shortened or renamed gives you a plot device.
  • Pets and soft toys suit the cute canon names (Jiji, Muta, Teto, Yakul, Heen) or any two-syllable Japanese word for something small and natural, like Momo (peach) or Suzu (bell).

Frequently asked questions

What are the most famous Studio Ghibli character names?

Totoro, Chihiro, Haku, No-Face, Kiki, Jiji, Howl, Sophie, Calcifer, Ponyo, San, Ashitaka, Sheeta, Pazu, Arrietty and Nausicaä are the best-known. Satsuki and Mei (My Neighbor Totoro) and Seita and Setsuko (Grave of the Fireflies) round out the classics.

Are Ghibli names Japanese or European?

Both. Films set in Japan (Totoro, Spirited Away, Whisper of the Heart, The Wind Rises) use real Japanese names. Films set in invented Europe (Howl's Moving Castle, Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, Porco Rosso, Arrietty) use English, Italian, French and German flavored names. This generator includes originals in both styles.

What is a good Ghibli name for a cat or dog?

Jiji (Kiki's black cat), Muta and Baron (The Cat Returns), Teto (Nausicaä's fox-squirrel), Yakul (Ashitaka's elk), Heen (Howl's wheezing dog) and Totoro itself are popular. Short Japanese words like Momo, Suzu, Kuro and Mame also work well and sound right at home in a Ghibli film.

Can I use canon Ghibli names for my own character?

For fan art, fan fiction, a pet or a game character, yes. If you are publishing an original story or selling a product, use one of the original Ghibli-style names instead of lifting a trademarked character such as Totoro or Ponyo.
