Generate Star Wars style faction names for RPG campaigns and fan fiction: rebel cells like Lantern Cell, Imperial holdouts like the Ninth Sector Remnant, Force sects like the Order of the Quiet Tide, Mandalorian clans like Clan Tarrok, plus guilds, sector governments and syndicates.

About Star Wars faction names

Factions in Star Wars announce what they are in the name. Governments use grand, plain words (Republic, Empire, Alliance, Order), criminal outfits prefer a color and something in the sky (Black Sun, Crimson Dawn), and commercial powers sound like paperwork: the Trade Federation, the Techno Union, the Mining Guild. A homemade faction works when it picks one register and keeps it.

The list is built around the groups a campaign needs. Rebel cells are short and hopeful (Lantern Cell, the Quiet Signal) or use Aurebesh letters as unit designations, as in Cresh Cell and Task Force Senth. Imperial remnants lean on rank and loyalty: the Ninth Sector Remnant, Moff Dravane's Protectorate, the Iron Mandate. Force sects avoid the words Jedi and Sith so you can define their beliefs, as with the Order of the Quiet Tide or the Kyber Choir. Mandalorian entries are invented clans, houses and coverts such as Clan Tarrok and the Covert of the Sunken Forge. Trade guilds, sector governments, mercenaries, species councils and droid collectives fill out the map, with crime syndicates kept to a small share.

Sixteen canon factions, from the Rebel Alliance to the Pyke Syndicate, are included as style anchors. The rest are invented, though many use canon places and a few may echo a name from the books, comics or games.

How to choose Star Wars faction names

  • Pick the register first. Governments sound formal (the Mid Rim Assembly), militaries sound clipped (Battle Group Harrow), believers sound poetic (Seekers of the Pale Kyber) and businesses sound dull on purpose (the Rimward Freight Compact).
  • Tie the faction to a place. Swap the planet in a name like the Free Garel Front or the Kalevala Home Guard for a world from your own campaign and the pattern still works.
  • Give every faction a rival with a matching name. A remnant called the Iron Mandate is more interesting once a cell called the Long Fuse is working against it.
  • Let the name show its age. New movements pick hopeful words like dawn, spark and free, while old institutions collect titles and numbers, as in the Council of the Seven Moffs.
  • For anything you publish, build on an invented name and leave the sixteen canon factions in the background.

Frequently asked questions

What are good names for a rebel cell?

Short, hopeful and easy to say over a comlink. Lantern Cell, Dawnrunner Cell, the Quiet Signal, the Kindling and the Long Fuse all work, and Aurebesh designations such as Cresh Cell or Task Force Senth sound like part of a larger military structure.

Which names in the list are canon?

Sixteen: Crimson Dawn, Black Sun, the Pyke Syndicate, the Hutt Cartel, Death Watch, the Rebel Alliance, the Galactic Empire, the First Order, the New Republic, the Trade Federation, the Techno Union, the Mining Guild, the Shadow Collective, the Confederacy of Independent Systems, the Chiss Ascendancy and the Guardians of the Whills. They are there as reference points for the style. The other names are invented, although many borrow canon planets, species and terms such as Kessel, Concordia, kyber and beskar.

How do I name a Force sect that is neither Jedi nor Sith?

Name it for what its members do or seek, not for the side they are on. Keepers of the Living Current, the Kyber Choir, Monks of the Thousand Steps and the Order of the Quiet Tide each suggest a practice, which leaves the group's view of the light and dark sides for you to decide.

Can I use these in a tabletop campaign or fan fiction?

Yes, that is what the list is written for, and the names also suit guilds and clans in online games. Star Wars itself belongs to Lucasfilm, so keep fan projects non-commercial and research any name yourself before using it on something you sell.
