Generate ship names for couples the way fandoms do: blended portmanteaus like Brangelina, Percabeth, and Destiel, plus the famous celebrity, TV, book, anime, and gaming pairings that set the pattern.

About couple ship names

A ship name is a portmanteau built from two people's names, used by fans (and by couples themselves) as shorthand for the pairing. The word comes from "relationship," and the practice took off in online fandom in the late 1990s before jumping to tabloids with Bennifer (Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez) in 2002 and Brangelina shortly after. Today almost every popular series has canonical ship names that fans use more often than the characters' actual names: Percabeth, Destiel, Klance, Bughead, Chenford.

The mechanics are consistent. Take the front of one name and the back of the other, cutting at a syllable boundary and preferably at a shared consonant or vowel: Draco + Hermione = Dramione, Steve + Bucky = Stucky, Nick + Charlie = Narlie. Whichever order sounds most like an existing word usually wins, which is why it is Romione rather than Herron. When first names refuse to blend, fandoms fall back on surnames (Fitzsimmons, Peraltiago, Gallavich, Chenford), a nickname plus a name (Wolfstar for Remus "Moony" and Sirius "Padfoot"), or a two-word phrase (Captain Swan, Outlaw Queen, Ineffable Husbands).

The names below are the well-known ships across celebrity culture, TV, books, anime, and games. Study a dozen and you will notice how few end in an awkward consonant cluster; that ear for smoothness is what you are aiming for when you build your own.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Try both orders. Emma + Killian could be Emmian or Killma; neither works, which is why fans landed on Captain Swan, a phrase built from titles instead.
  • Cut at a shared sound. Names that overlap on a letter (Kim + Kanye = Kimye, Zayn + Gigi = Zigi) blend most cleanly, so look for a common vowel or consonant.
  • Aim for two or three syllables that read like a real word. Ship names that are easy to say and spell spread faster; Bughead stuck partly because it sounds like a nickname.
  • If first names fail, use last names or nicknames. Surname blends (Peraltiago, Chenford) sound more grown-up and work well for real couples too.
  • For a real couple, say the result out loud in a sentence before adopting it; a blend that accidentally spells another word (Bennifer was fine, but check yours) will follow you around.

Frequently asked questions

How do you make a ship name from two names?

Combine the beginning of one name with the end of the other, splitting where the sounds overlap or at a syllable break. Ron + Hermione becomes Romione; Steve + Bucky becomes Stucky. Try both orders and pick the one that sounds most like a natural word.

What was the first celebrity ship name?

Bennifer, coined for Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez around 2002, is generally credited as the first tabloid portmanteau couple name, followed by Brangelina in 2005. Fandom had been blending character names online for years before that.

Can I use a ship name for my own relationship or wedding?

Absolutely; couples use blended names for wedding hashtags, joint social accounts, and Instagram captions. Surname blends often work best because they are less likely to already belong to a famous fandom pairing.

Why do some ships use two words instead of a blend?

When the names do not blend well (or the blend is unpronounceable), fandoms use descriptive phrases built from titles or traits: Captain Swan (Captain Hook and Emma Swan), Outlaw Queen (Robin Hood and the Evil Queen), or Ineffable Husbands (Aziraphale and Crowley).
