Sandlot Name Generator
Kid ballplayers with nicknames from a 1962 summer
The Sandlot character names from Scotty Smalls to Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, then new 1960s neighborhood kids on the same recipe, such as Leonard "Two-Hop" Kowalczyk, Raymond "Windup" Delgado and Margaret "Line-Drive" Hutchins, plus grown-ups, legendary dogs and lots.
About Sandlot names
The Sandlot (1993) follows nine boys through the summer of 1962, and almost every one of them answers to a nickname. The pattern is a full, slightly formal first name, a nickname in quotation marks and a plain family name: Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, Hamilton "Ham" Porter, Michael "Squints" Palledorous, Alan "Yeah-Yeah" McClennan. The nicknames come from speed, a habit or a catchphrase, and once a kid has one it sticks.
The first 14 entries are character names from the film, listed as names for reference and not as a full cast. Everything after them is new and is not from the film. Most of the list is kids built on the same recipe: regulars of a pickup team such as Leonard "Two-Hop" Kowalczyk, little brothers and tag-alongs, girls who play, the rival side in matching uniforms and older teens with summer jobs. Their first names fit children born around 1950, and the surnames are ordinary ones from a mixed Los Angeles valley neighborhood.
About a fifth of the list is everything else a summer needs: neighbors known as Mr. or Mrs., legendary dogs and backyard monsters, vacant lots and a few team names.
How to choose Sandlot names
- Let the nickname be earned. Tie it to one play, one habit or one thing the kid always says: Raymond "Windup" Delgado takes forever to pitch, and Jeffrey "Can-I-Play" Langley asks every single day.
- Keep nicknames kind. The good ones are about what a kid does, never about how a kid looks, so a whole team can shout them without anyone minding.
- Use the formal first name for contrast. Bernard, Theodore and Guadalupe sound like roll call, which is what makes "Frozen-Rope", "Full-Count" and "Lightning-Bug" land.
- Fill in the neighborhood. A story needs a house behind the fence, a dog with a reputation and a place to play, such as Mrs. Peabody, The Left-Field Monster and The Weed Patch.
- Give the rival side tidier names. Bradford "All-Star" Pemberton and Winfield "By-the-Book" Radcliffe sound like a team with matching uniforms and a schedule.
Frequently asked questions
What are the names of the kids in The Sandlot?
The nine players are Scotty Smalls, Benny "The Jet" Rodriguez, Hamilton "Ham" Porter, Michael "Squints" Palledorous, Alan "Yeah-Yeah" McClennan, Kenny DeNunez, Bertram Grover Weeks and the brothers Timmy and Tommy "Repeat" Timmons. Wendy Peffercorn is the lifeguard at the pool, and Mr. Mertle owns the dog behind the fence, The Beast, whose name is Hercules.
Which names are from the film and which are new?
The first 14 entries, from Scotty Smalls to Phillips, are character names from the film, given for reference and not as a full cast list. Everything else is new and only follows the film's style, for example Leonard "Two-Hop" Kowalczyk, Dorothy "Dot" Gallagher and Mr. Zabriskie. This is a fan page with no link to the studio.
How are Sandlot-style nicknames made?
Take a formal first name from around 1950, add a nickname in quotation marks for something the kid does, and finish with an ordinary surname. Speed gives you Howard "Wheels" Yates, a habit gives you Alvin "Pockets" Gaines and a catchphrase gives you Julio "Dibs" Gutierrez.
Can I use these names for a team, a story or a party?
Yes. The new names work for a fan story, a classroom writing prompt, name tags at a baseball birthday party or a backyard team roster. The list is fixed, so nothing is worked out from your own name: pick an entry you like, or mix a first name, a nickname and a surname yourself.
