RWBY has one hard naming law, set by creator Monty Oum and explained in the show’s lore: a name must be a color, mean a color, or make people think of one. Ruby, Weiss (German for white), Blake (Old English for black) and Yang (Chinese for sun) spell out RWBY. Jaune is French for yellow, Pyrrha is Greek for flame-colored, Cinder, Emerald and Mercury are shades and metals, and Ozpin nods to the green of Oz. Surnames follow suit: Schnee is snow, Belladonna a purple-black berry, Ironwood and Torchwick suggest gray and fire.

A strong RWBY OC name works on two levels. First, it hits the color rule, ideally in a language other than English so it feels natural rather than on the nose (Rouge, Kuro, Verde, Bleu, Aoi). Second, the color should say something about the character’s design, Semblance or personality, and often nods to a fairy tale or myth the way Ruby is Little Red Riding Hood and Weiss is Snow White. Pairing a color first name with an evocative surname (Cerise Vermont, Sable Kingsley, Cobalt Reyes) is the most reliable pattern.
