Russian Middle Name Generator
Real Russian patronymics for sons and daughters
Browse 1,000 Russian middle names, which are really patronymics built from the father's name: Ivanovich, Sergeyevna, Ilyich and Yakovlevna, plus spoken short forms like Palych and polite pairs like Darya Kirillovna.
About Russian middle names
A Russian middle name is not chosen the way an English one is. It is a patronymic (otchestvo): the father's given name plus an ending, so brothers share one form and sisters the other. A son of Ivan is Ivanovich and a daughter is Ivanovna. Given name plus patronymic, as in Darya Kirillovna, is the polite way to address an adult.
The rule is short. After a hard consonant add -ovich or -ovna: Maksim gives Maksimovich and Maksimovna. Names ending in -y, such as Sergey, Yury and Dmitry, take -evich and -evna: Sergeyevich, Yuryevich, Dmitriyevna. A few stems shift (Pavel to Pavlovich, Lev to Lvovich, Yakov to Yakovlevich), and some names ending in -a or -ya form a small irregular set: Ilyich and Ilyinichna, Nikitich and Nikitichna, Lukich and Lukinichna.
The list holds sons' and daughters' forms side by side: patronymics from today's common names, from old Orthodox calendar names such as Afanasyevich and Yevdokimovna, from Soviet-era names, and from fathers' names of other peoples of Russia, such as Rinatovich and Arturovna. Entries marked "spoken" are the clipped forms heard in conversation, like Palych for Pavlovich. A small share shows a given name with its patronymic.
How to choose Russian middle names
- Pick the father first. A patronymic tells the reader the father's given name, so a character called Sergeyevich needs a father named Sergey somewhere in the family tree.
- Match the ending to the bearer: -ovich, -evich and -ich for a man, -ovna, -evna, -ichna and -inichna for a woman. A brother and sister pair up as Olegovich and Olegovna.
- Use given name plus patronymic to show respect. Teachers, doctors, bosses and in-laws are Nina Stepanovna or Roman Filippovich, with no surname needed.
- Keep the spoken forms for dialogue. Palych, Sanych and Mikhalych sound warm and familiar among colleagues and neighbors, while documents carry the full Pavlovich, Aleksandrovich and Mikhaylovich.
- Let the patronymic date the father. Gennadyevich and Valeryevna point to a father born around the middle of the twentieth century; Yermolayevich and Fominichna suggest a much older village generation.
Frequently asked questions
Do Russians have middle names?
Not in the English sense. The second part of a Russian full name is a patronymic formed from the father's given name, so it is inherited rather than picked by the parents. Ivan's children are Ivanovich and Ivanovna, and the form is recorded in official documents together with the given name and the surname.
How do I form a patronymic from a father's name?
Add -ovich or -ovna after a hard consonant (Anton gives Antonovich and Antonovna) and -evich or -evna after a name ending in -y (Andrey gives Andreyevich and Andreyevna). Names that end in a soft consonant in Russian also take -evich, as in Igorevich from Igor and Lazarevich from Lazar. Watch the stems that change, such as Pavlovich from Pavel and Lvovna from Lev, and the irregular set that includes Ilyich, Kuzmich and Fomich with the daughters' forms Ilyinichna, Kuzminichna and Fominichna. This page is a list to pick from, so look for the father's name in it or apply the rule yourself.
What are the entries marked spoken?
In everyday speech long patronymics are clipped: Ivanovich becomes Ivanych, Pavlovich becomes Palych and Ivanovna becomes Ivanna. The list labels each of these with its full form, for example "Sanych (spoken Aleksandrovich)". Use them in dialogue only, because they are not written on documents.
Why does a Russian list include forms like Rinatovich and Armenovna?
Russia is home to many peoples, and the patronymic rule is applied to any father's name. A Tatar father named Rinat gives Rinatovich and Rinatovna, and an Armenian father named Armen gives Armenovich and Armenovna. The list includes a share of such forms from Tatar, Caucasian, Armenian, Georgian, German, Polish and Jewish names that are in use in Russia.
