Generate Russian fantasy names that sound like they belong in a bylina or a Grisha-style novel: bogatyrs and tsarevnas from folklore, invented Slavic given names, atmospheric surnames like Chernolesov and Zvezdinskaya, patronymics, and fairy-tale epithets.
About russian fantasy names
Russian fantasy names work best when they borrow the machinery of real Russian naming and then push the vocabulary toward the fairy tale. The machinery is three parts: a given name, a patronymic built from the father's name (-ovich/-evich for sons, -ovna/-evna for daughters), and a surname that changes ending by gender, so Chernolesov's sister is Chernolesova and Zvezdinsky's daughter is Zvezdinskaya. Getting those endings right is what separates a name that sounds Russian from one that only looks it.
The fairy-tale vocabulary comes from the byliny and skazki. Heroes carry a patronymic or a place-name as a badge (Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich, Alyosha Popovich), and princes and princesses carry an epithet instead of a surname: Vasilisa the Wise, Yelena the Fair, Marya Morevna, Koschei the Deathless, Finist the Bright Falcon. Old pre-Christian given names built from slava (glory), mir (peace or world), svet (light), rad (glad) and lyub (love) – Svetozar, Radomir, Zvenislava, Lyubava – sound older and more mythic than the Greek and Hebrew saints' names Russians actually used later.
The invented surnames here are made the same way Russian surnames were, from nature words and traits: Tumanov from mist, Grozovoy from thunderstorm, Kostyanoy from bone, Zlatogorsky from golden mountain. Use them for characters in Slavic-inspired fantasy, Grishaverse-style settings, or tabletop campaigns.
Tips for choosing a name
- Match the surname ending to the character's gender: -ov/-ev/-in/-sky for men becomes -ova/-eva/-ina/-skaya for women. Zoryana Chernolesov is a mistake a Russian reader spots instantly.
- Use a fairy-tale epithet (the Wise, the Fair, the Bright Falcon, Morevna) for royalty and legendary figures, and a surname for everyone else. Folk heroes rarely had both.
- Add a patronymic when you want formality or age: Vasilisa Yegorovna Ognevskaya is how a boyarynya is addressed, Vasilisa is how her friends address her, and Vasilisushka is what her grandmother calls her.
- Old Slavic compound names (Svetozar, Mstislav, Predslava) read as ancient nobility; Orthodox names (Fyodor, Agafya, Prokhor) read as peasants, priests and merchants. Mixing the two across social classes gives a setting texture.
- Titles carry setting flavor on their own: knyaz and knyaginya for princes, boyar for great nobles, voivode for a war-leader, volkhv for a pagan sorcerer-priest, vedma for a witch, bogatyr for a wandering hero.
Frequently asked questions
What is a bogatyr?
A bogatyr is the knight-errant of Russian epic poetry (the byliny): a hero of immense strength who serves Prince Vladimir of Kiev and defends the land against dragons, Tatar hosts and monsters. The three most famous are Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich and Alyosha Popovich. A female equivalent, a polyanitsa, also appears in the byliny, usually as a warrior-maiden who fights the hero to a standstill.
How do Russian patronymics work in fantasy names?
Take the father's first name and add -ovich or -evich for a son and -ovna or -evna for a daughter (after a name ending in -a, use -ich and -ichna: Ilya gives Ilyich and Ilyinichna). Nikitich literally means son of Nikita. Patronymics are used with the given name as a respectful form of address, so a character addressed as Radomir Glebovich is being treated as a grown man of some standing.
Are these names from the Grishaverse or Shadow and Bone?
No. Leigh Bardugo's Ravka uses Russian-inspired naming, but all the names here are either from genuine Russian folklore (Koschei, Vasilisa, Sadko) or invented from Russian word roots, so they are free to use in your own fiction or games. The Grishaverse generator linked above covers that specific setting.
What makes a name sound Russian rather than generically Slavic?
Russian favors the endings -ov, -ev, -in and -sky on surnames, the -ovich/-ovna patronymic, and diminutives in -ushka, -enka and -ochka. Polish leans toward -ski and -wicz, Czech toward -ek and -ová, Serbian toward -ić. Spelling also matters: Yevgeny, Fyodor and Zhuravlyov follow Russian transliteration conventions, while Eugeniusz and Teodor would read as Polish.
