Find a rockabilly band name among 1,000 ideas in the 1950s manner: frontman acts like Rusty Malone and the Tailfins, cat and car plurals like The Flat-Top Cats and The Chrome Dominoes, small groups like Slapback Trio, and diner, pomade and sock hop names like The Jukebox Nickels and The Pomade Brigade.

About rockabilly band names

Rockabilly is the mid-1950s meeting of country and rhythm and blues: a slapped upright bass, a twanging guitar soaked in slapback echo and a singer with a hiccup in the voice. The word joins rock and hillbilly, and the band names keep both halves. They are friendly, a little boastful and built on a few forms that have hardly changed since: a frontman 'and the' or 'and His' plural, 'The' plus a plural, and a small group that states its size, a trio or a combo.

This list of 1,000 follows those forms through the scene's own subjects. There are frontman acts (Rusty Malone and the Tailfins, Ruby Tate and Her Red Hots), cat and alley names (The Flat-Top Cats), car names (The Chrome Dominoes, The Glasspack Three), trios and combos (Slapback Trio, Lucky Thirteen Combo), jukebox and diner names, pompadour jokes (The Pomade Brigade), Memphis, Texas and western swing names, sock hop, wardrobe, railroad and honky-tonk names, and shorter names in the manner of the 1980s revival (Neon Quiff).

One thing is left out on purpose: horror. Graveyards and monsters belong to psychobilly, which has its own page. Everything here stays with cars, cats, jukeboxes and Saturday night.

How to choose rockabilly band names

  • Start with the form. A singer with a stage name suits 'Name and the Plurals', a group of equals suits 'The' plus a plural, and a three-piece can simply say so, as in Slapback Trio or The Glasspack Three.
  • Match the plural to the leader. Rusty Malone and the Tailfins works because rust and tailfins come from the same garage. Put your singer's own first name in front and keep a plural that fits it.
  • Say it the way an emcee would. A rockabilly name gets announced from a stage and shouted across a dance floor, so pick one that is easy to say in one breath and hard to mishear.
  • Think about the bass drum head and the flyer. Short names such as Neon Quiff or Tape Echo fit a kick drum head, a bowling shirt and the side of an upright bass.
  • Search before you print anything. Rockabilly has many small bands around the world, so look up your favorite on the streaming services, on social media and in gig listings for your region first.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a band name sound rockabilly?

The 1950s forms and the scene's own subjects. Names such as The Flat-Top Cats, The Chrome Dominoes and Hank Delray and His Drive-In Daddies pair a plural or a frontman with cats, cars, hair grease, jukeboxes or a dance. A size word such as trio or combo does the same job.

How is this different from the psychobilly band names?

Psychobilly adds horror-film imagery and punk speed to rockabilly, so its names carry graveyards and monsters. This list leaves all of that out. It stays with 1950s subjects: hot rods, alley cats, diners, pompadours, sock hops and Memphis and Texas place names.

Are any of these names already used by a band?

Some may be. The well-known rockabilly acts were left out on purpose, but nobody has looked each name up, and the scene has many small bands in many countries. Search your shortlist before you book a show or print shirts.

Are there names for a female-fronted band?

Yes. The list includes acts led by women, such as Ruby Tate and Her Red Hots and Peggy Marlowe and the Marquee Lights, and group names like The Saddle Shoe Sisters. Any 'and His' name can become 'and Her', and a trio name can be recut for a duo or a four-piece.
