A reporter's name is a brand that has to survive being said on air twice an hour and printed under a headline in eight-point type. Broadcast news pushed names toward two or three punchy syllables with strong consonants, which is why the fictional anchor archetype sounds like Chet Chandler, Trent Maddox or Dana Whitlock, and why alliteration (Lois Lane, Vicki Vale, Kent Brockman) has stuck since the comic-strip era. Old newsrooms also ran on nicknames, so a city desk might have a Scoop, a Red and a Buzz alongside the bylined staff.

Print reporters and foreign correspondents pull the other way. A byline carries weight when it looks like a real person rather than a character, so the generator includes plain, credible names such as Margaret Okafor, Priya Raman, Tomasz Wieliczko and Rafael Medina, the kind you would expect on a wire story datelined Lagos, Delhi, Warsaw or Bogota. Occasional initials (J. T. Halloran) and hyphenated surnames (Daniela Ruiz-Calderon) add texture without tipping into parody.

The list also includes famous fictional journalists from film, comics and TV, and historic pioneers like Nellie Bly, Ida B. Wells and Edward R. Murrow. Mix the registers to build a whole newsroom: a polished anchor, a dogged investigative reporter, a weather personality and a rumpled columnist.
