Generate names for protests and the campaigns behind them: marches like March for the River, demands like Hands Off Hollow Park, and sit-ins, walkouts, vigils and pickets such as Thursday Walkout and Lanterns for Linden Street. Every cause is local and every place is invented.

About protest names

A protest name has to work on a banner, on a flyer and in a spoken sentence. Most follow a few patterns. The plainest one names the action and the cause: March for the River, Rally for the Reading Room, Stand for the Stacks. A demand name says what should happen, as in Hands Off Hollow Park, Save Our Stacks or Fix the 14 Bus. Others name the form itself, a sit-in, walkout, vigil or picket, and some take a day of the week, like Standstill Saturday or Thursday Walkout.

This list holds 1,000 invented names in those forms and more: slogan names, student and campus actions, tenant and neighborhood campaigns, creative actions such as The Pots and Pans Night, a small share of coalition names, and one-word movement names like Groundswell. A few belong to fictional worlds, among them The Lantern Walk of Lowmarket, for novels and games that need a peaceful protest rather than an armed rising.

The causes stay broad and local (parks, rents, buses, libraries, wages, clean water, school funding), and the names take no side on divisive national questions. Every place is made up, so swap in your own street, school or town. Before a name goes on a banner, search it yourself to see whether a real group already uses it.

How to choose protest names

  • Say the cause in the name. March for the River and Rally for the Route 9 Bus tell a passerby what the day is about before they read the flyer.
  • Match the name to the form: a vigil name can sound quiet (Lanterns for Linden Street), a walkout name brisk (Thursday Walkout), and a march name can say where it ends (March to City Hall).
  • Keep it short enough to say in one breath and to paint on a sheet. Three to five words fit a banner; a longer name such as The Long Walk to City Hall reads better as a poster title.
  • Swap the invented place for your own. Hands Off Hollow Park takes the name of your park and keeps its rhythm.
  • In fiction, let people shorten the name the way they would in life: Standstill Saturday can become "the Standstill" a few chapters later.

Frequently asked questions

What makes a good protest name?

A good protest name states the action, the cause or both in a few plain words. Names like Save Our Stacks or Rise for Renters can be read at a glance and said out loud without stumbling. Alliteration and rhythm help people remember a name, but clarity matters more than cleverness.

What kinds of protest names are in this list?

The 1,000 names cover marches, rallies, sit-ins, walkouts, vigils and pickets, plus demand names, slogan names, day names and one-word movement names. Examples include Hands Off Hollow Park, The Clean Water Coalition, Standstill Saturday and Lanterns for Linden Street. A small share is written for fictional worlds.

Are these the names of real protests or movements?

No. The names are invented for this list, the places are made up, and none is meant to refer to a real march, organization or slogan. A short name can still match a real group somewhere, so search a name yourself before you use it in public.

Can I use these names in a novel, a game or a class project?

Yes. They suit a march in a small-town novel, a student campaign in a civics exercise, or a peaceful demonstration in a fantasy or science-fiction setting, such as The Petition of a Thousand Quills. Change the place and the cause to fit your world.
