About play names

Play titles work differently from novel or film titles because they have to sell a live evening to someone reading a poster or a season brochure. The strongest ones do one of a few jobs: name the place the whole play happens in (A Room Above the Bakery, The Boarding House at Number Nine), name a person and hint at their problem (Harriet Has a Plan, Miss Pemberton Declines), lift a line someone might say on stage (Don't Answer the Door), or pick a single loaded word the play will redefine (Rationing, Probate). Because most plays unfold in one or two rooms, titles naming a room, a meal or an occasion feel instantly theatrical.

Tone should be readable from the title alone. Comedies and farces can afford a joke or a long, breathless title; dramas and tragedies usually go shorter and plainer; thrillers lean on a place plus a threat (Locked Room at Lamplight Hall). Pub, hotel and street names add a distinctly British-theatre flavour, and a full name in the title promises a character study.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Decide what the title is promising: a place (The Ballroom at Rook Hall), a person (The Other Mrs. Ashby), an event (The Rehearsal Dinner) or a line of dialogue (I Was Told There Would Be Cake). Audiences forgive almost any title that keeps its promise.
  • Match the length to the genre. Two or three words suit drama and tragedy (Ghost Light, Cold Supper); long titles with a comma or a joke in them signal comedy and farce (Dinner at Eight, Disaster at Nine).
  • Search the title with the words play, theatre and script before committing. Short titles are reused constantly, so check that yours is not already a well-known play, film or novel.
  • For a school or youth theatre production, pick a title that works on a poster and tells parents what to expect: Prom Night at Ashcombe High or The Youth Club Nativity beats an abstract single word.
  • Change a place name or surname in any title here to fit your own setting; The Women of Blackthorn Mill becomes The Women of Ravensworth Mill without losing its shape.

Start from what the audience will literally see: the room, the occasion, the person at the centre, or a line someone says. Write down ten candidates of each kind, say them aloud as if announcing them on a poster, and keep the ones that tell the truth about tone. Most good play titles are short, concrete and slightly off-kilter rather than abstract.
