About Pakistani last names

Pakistan has no single surname system. Many people carry a name that marks a clan, tribe or lineage, many others use their father's given name as a last name, and some use no family name at all. So the last name on a passport may be an old tribal name such as Afridi or a father's name such as Iqbal or Akram, and both are normal. This list gives what people really carry, and the notes below sort the main kinds by where they come from.

In Punjab, last names are often clan names or old titles: Chaudhry, Bajwa, Cheema, Warraich, Bhatti, Janjua and Awan. Pashtun last names are usually tribes, many ending in -zai, which means descendants of, or -khel, a branch of a tribe: Yousafzai, Orakzai, Khattak, Adamkhel. Sindh has Bhutto, Soomro, Junejo and Memon, and the Baloch have Bugti, Marri, Mengal and Bizenjo. Kashmiri families in Pakistan are often Butt, Dar, Lone or Mir.

Other names cross every region. Syed, Shah, Qureshi, Hashmi, Siddiqui and Farooqui state a family's claimed line of descent from early Islamic figures. Names such as Dehlvi, Amrohi and Jalandhari simply say where a family once lived, and they are common among families who moved from India in 1947. Karachi's trading families add names such as Adamjee, Lakhani and Cowasjee.

How to choose Pakistani last names

  • Match the name to the region of your character. A family from Peshawar or Swat might be Yousafzai or Khattak, one from Larkana Bhutto or Chandio, one from Quetta Raisani or Kakar, and one from Gujranwala Cheema or Butt.
  • Remember that a given name can be the last name. Pairing a first name with Iqbal, Akram, Hussain or Aziz is as true to life as using a clan name.
  • Spellings vary because the names are written in Urdu script first. Farooqui and Farooqi, Sheikh and Shaikh, Kiani and Kayani are the same names, so pick one spelling and keep it for the whole family.
  • Do not read too much into a name. Malik, Khan, Shah and Sheikh are used across many communities, so they work for almost any character.
  • There is no single rule for married names. A woman may keep her father's name or take her husband's first or last name, so a family in your story can share a last name or not.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most common last names in Pakistan?

Khan, Malik, Chaudhry, Butt, Sheikh, Qureshi, Shah, Syed, Hussain, Ahmed and Ali are among the last names you will meet most often. Some are clan or lineage names and some are given names used as last names. We give no rankings or figures, because we have no count we trust.

Do all Pakistanis have a family surname?

No. Many families pass down a clan, tribe or lineage name, but many people simply use their father's given name, or a second personal name, as a last name, and it can change from one generation to the next. That is why this list includes names such as Iqbal, Akram and Nawaz beside tribal names such as Afridi and Bugti.

What do -zai and -khel mean in Pashtun names?

Both mark a tribe or a branch of one. The ending -zai means sons or descendants of, as in Yousafzai and Orakzai, and -khel marks a clan within a larger tribe, as in Adamkhel and Kukikhel. They tell you which group a family counts itself in, not where a person lives today.

Does a Pakistani last name show someone's background?

Sometimes it hints at a region or community, since Bhutto is Sindhi, Bugti is Baloch and Khattak is Pashtun. But many names are shared widely, families adopt and change names, and a name like Syed or Qureshi records a family tradition, not a proven family tree. Treat a last name as a clue, never as proof of ancestry, faith or status.
