Find 500 design concepts for a tattoo that holds two, three or more names, such as "Family tree with a name on each branch", "Three names around a trinity knot, one per loop" and "Grandkids' names on quilt squares". Each idea is a short description in words, with "name" standing in for the names you choose.

About this generator

The hard part of a tattoo with several names is not the names, it is the layout. Three need a shape, such as a triangle, a trinity knot or three stems in one bouquet. Five or ten need a structure that still reads clearly at a small size, which is where family trees, vines, constellations and charm bracelets earn their place: each gives every name its own branch, leaf, star or charm, and none of them looks unfinished if the family grows.

This page lists 500 design concepts in words, with "name" standing in for the names you choose. About one in seven ideas is a layout for exactly three names, about as many are for grandparents who want their grandkids' names together (Grandkids' names on quilt squares), and dozens leave room to add a name later, such as a vine that ends in an open tendril or bunting with blank flags at the end. Others use birth flowers, stacked names with birth dates, footprints and handwriting, for parents with their kids' names as much as for grandparents.

Treat each entry as a brief for your tattoo artist, not a finished design. Small lettering can blur as a tattoo ages, so ask how small each name can go at the size and placement you have in mind.

Tips for choosing a name

  • Count the letters in every name before you choose a layout. One long name among short ones can throw off a stack or a circle, and your artist may suggest a design where each name has its own space.
  • If the family may grow, pick a design that can take another name without looking patched: a vine, a constellation, a charm bracelet or a row of bunting.
  • Ask how small the lettering can go. Names on leaves, charms and stars are tiny, and small lettering can blur as a tattoo ages, so a slightly larger design often stays readable for longer.
  • Agree on one script and one size for every name, and keep a photo of the stencil, so a name added years later can match.
  • Check every spelling and date on the stencil yourself, then have a second person check it too.

Frequently asked questions

What are some tattoo ideas with 3 names?

Three names need a shape that gives each one equal weight. From the list: "Three names in a triangle, one along each side", "Three names around a trinity knot, one per loop" and "Three names as three stems in one bouquet". A simple stack in one script with birth dates also works on a forearm or along the ribs.

What are some tattoo ideas for grandkids' names?

About one in seven ideas is for grandparents, such as "Grandkids' names on quilt squares", "Grandpa's fishing line with a fish for every grandchild" and "Grandma's garden with a flower for every grandchild". Many of them are built so a new grandbaby can be added later as another leaf, heart or charm.

How do I leave room to add a name later?

Choose a design with a natural open end. "Vine that ends in an open tendril for the next name", "Constellation with room for another star" and "Bunting with blank flags at the end" can all grow without looking unfinished now. Tell your artist about the plan so they can place the piece with space beside or below it.

Are these finished tattoo designs?

No. Each entry is a short concept in words, and "name" stands in for the names you choose. Take your favorites to a tattoo artist, who can draw the design and advise on size, placement and how many names it can hold.
