Forest names in Latin for maps, novels, games and worldbuilding, each with an English gloss: Nemus Sacrum (sacred grove), Lucus Dianae (grove of Diana), Saltus Luporum (wolves' upland wood) and Silva Umbrosa (shady forest), plus labelled Roman names such as Hercynia Silva.

About Latin forest names

Latin has four everyday words for a wood, and choosing between them is most of the craft. Silva (feminine) is the general word for a forest, wild and spreading. Nemus (neuter, genitive nemoris) is a wood with glades and a favorite of the poets. Lucus (masculine) is a grove consecrated to a god, which is why it so often takes a deity in the genitive: Lucus Dianae, Lucus Iovis. Saltus (masculine, fourth declension) is wooded upland, a forest pass or woodland pasture, as in Saltus Luporum.

Adjectives follow the gender of the noun, so one idea changes its ending: Silva Sacra, Nemus Sacrum, Lucus Sacer. A wood of a single kind of tree takes the ending -etum, as in Quercetum Vetus and Pinetum Nigrum. Every entry gives the Latin name with an English gloss in parentheses.

A share of the list is labelled. Names such as Hercynia Silva, Silva Ciminia and Saltus Teutoburgiensis are attested in Roman authors, and the gloss says where. Forms like Foresta Regis and Boscus Abbatis are marked medieval, because foresta and boscus belong to charters, not to classical Latin. The unlabelled entries are plain descriptive Latin, and plain combinations were often real names too: Silva Nigra was the medieval Latin name of the Black Forest.

How to choose Latin forest names

  • Choose the noun by what the place is: silva for a big wild forest, nemus for a pleasant wood with glades, lucus only for a grove that belongs to a god, and saltus for wooded hills, a pass or forest pasture.
  • If you adapt a name, keep the agreement. The adjective changes with the noun, as Silva Aurea, Nemus Aureum and Lucus Aureus show, so do not move an ending from one noun to another.
  • Owners and inhabitants go in the genitive, exactly as listed: Lucus Dianae, Saltus Germanorum, Silva Draconum. Swapping in a different god or people means finding that word's genitive first.
  • Match the label to the setting. Attested names suit historical fiction in the Roman world, the medieval forms such as Foresta Regis and Boscus Monachorum suit a charter, an abbey or a royal hunting ground, and the plain entries suit fantasy maps.
  • Put the Latin on the map and the gloss in the key, or let characters argue over the translation. Plural forms such as Silvae Geminae and Nemora Alta work well for whole regions.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Latin word for forest?

Silva is the general word, as in Silva Umbrosa (shady forest) and Silva Tacita (silent forest). Nemus is a wood with glades, lucus is a sacred grove and saltus is wooded upland or a forest pass. The list uses all four, so you can pick the one that fits the place.

Are these real Roman forest names?

Some are, and those carry a label in the gloss: Hercynia Silva and Silva Arduenna come from Caesar, Silva Ciminia from Livy and Saltus Teutoburgiensis from Tacitus. The rest are descriptive Latin names without a source. That does not make them unused, since simple pairings were real place names more than once: Silva Nigra is the medieval Latin name of the Black Forest.

How do you say dark forest or enchanted forest in Latin?

For a dark forest the list has Silva Obscura (dark forest), Silva Atra (pitch-dark forest) and Silva Tenebrosa (gloomy forest). For an enchanted one it has Silva Incantata and Nemus Incantatum, and for a holy one Nemus Sacrum or Lucus Sacer.

Why are some names marked medieval?

Foresta, boscus, parcus and haia are words of medieval charters and surveys, not of classical Latin, where a writer would have used silva or saltus. Names such as Foresta Regis (the king's forest), Haia Regis and Boscus Abbatis fit a medieval kingdom or a monastery, and the label keeps them apart from the classical entries.
