Deals Japanese kirakira given names with reading, kanji and a short gloss, such as Raito (月, moon, English light) and Kokoa (心愛, heart and love). The 500 entries mix pairings reported in the Japanese press with pairings built by the same reading tricks.

About kirakira names

Kirakira names (キラキラネーム, sparkly names) are Japanese given names whose kanji are read in ways a reader would not guess. Four tricks account for most of them: reading the kanji as a foreign word (月 as Raito, from light), borrowing a nanori, a reading kanji take only in names, clipping a normal reading (koko from kokoro), and reading kanji as a whole word for their meaning. A fifth group uses ordinary readings that make the whole name sound foreign, as in Juria (樹里亜, like Julia). Each entry gives reading, kanji and gloss.

The list mixes two kinds of entry. Some pairings, such as Kokoa (心愛) and Naito (騎士), have been reported in the Japanese press, surveys and name rankings. The rest were built for this page with the same tricks, from readings and meanings that belong to the kanji. Entries are not marked either way, so treat none as a record of what families register. Boys' and girls' names appear in equal numbers.

In the early 1990s a dispute over registering the name Akuma (devil) went to a family court, and it is still cited today. Since May 2025 Japan's family register records the reading of every name, and officials can refuse a reading with no connection to the kanji. A pairing here may or may not pass that test.

How to choose kirakira names

  • Read the gloss before the sound. A gloss that names a language (English, French, Latin) means the reading is that foreign word, while a gloss such as like Leo means ordinary kanji readings that happen to spell a foreign name.
  • Long vowels in borrowed words are written double (Haato, Shiizaa). Japanese readings use the plain style of the rest of the site (Koki, Ryusei, Yuto).
  • For a character in fiction, decide who chose the name and why. A kirakira name says as much about the parents as about the child, and the style drew the most press attention in the 2000s and 2010s.
  • If you are naming a baby in Japan, ask the municipal office about the reading first. Since May 2025 it is recorded in the family register and can be refused.
  • Pair a flashy given name with a plain surname from the Japanese Last Name Generator so the full name stays believable.

Frequently asked questions

What is a kirakira name?

It is a Japanese given name whose kanji are read in an unexpected way, often as a foreign word or a clipped reading. Raito (月, moon, English light) and Jueru (宝石, English jewel) are the kind of examples the Japanese press quotes. The word kirakira means sparkling, and people use it both fondly and critically.

Are all 500 names here reported examples?

No. The list mixes pairings that have appeared in Japanese press lists, surveys and rankings, such as Kokoa (心愛, heart and love), Noa (希空, hope and sky) and Kirara (希星, hope and twinkling star), with pairings built for this page by the same reading tricks. The entries are not labeled by source, and none should be read as a record of a registered name.

Can these readings be registered in Japan today?

That depends on the reading. Since May 2025 the family register records how each name is read, and officials can refuse a reading with no recognized link to the kanji. This page makes no claim about which pairings would pass, so ask the municipal office before choosing one for a baby.

How do the four reading tricks work?

A foreign-word reading keeps the meaning of the kanji and swaps the sound, as in Naito (騎士, English knight). A clipped reading keeps only the head of a normal reading, as in Koa (心愛, heart and love). A nanori is a reading used only in names, as in Nodoka (和, harmony), and a whole-word reading treats the kanji as one word, as in Kosumosu (秋桜, the cosmos flower).
