Japanese Playlist Name Generator
Romaji and English titles for Japanese playlists
Generate Japanese playlist names for city pop drives, J-rock gym sets, Showa kayo Sundays and lo-fi study hours: romaji titles with a gloss such as Yoru no Drive (Night Drive) and Komorebi Mornings, plus English titles such as Konbini at 2AM and Shinkansen Window Seat.
About Japanese playlist names
A Japanese playlist title usually takes one of two shapes. The first is a real Japanese word or short phrase in romaji with an English gloss, as in Yoru no Drive (Night Drive), Amayadori (Sheltering From the Rain) or Shuumatsu (Weekend) Rotation. The second is an English title built on a Japanese place, season or scene: Konbini at 2AM, Shinkansen Window Seat, Showa Kayo Sunday.
The list of 1,000 is built in fifteen styles so rerolls feel different: city pop and night drives, spring and the rainy season, summer festivals through New Year, study and lo-fi, rainy days, trains and commutes, cafes and kissaten, Showa and Heisei nostalgia, J-rock, heartbreak ballads and karaoke, travel by city, genre labels and listening practice for learners, lowercase captions, single evocative words, and everyday phrases for days and times.
The romaji is Hepburn without macrons. Long vowels are written out, so you will see yuugure and shuumatsu, except in names and labels that English already spells its own way, such as Tokyo, Osaka, Showa and kayo. Particles stay lowercase. The titles name moods, times, places and genres, never an artist, a band or a song, though a short everyday phrase can still match a song title somewhere, and nobody has checked that.
How to choose Japanese playlist names
- Keep the English gloss when you share a romaji title. Komorebi (Sunlight Through Leaves) tells a friend who does not read Japanese what mood to expect.
- Use an era label only when the tracks fit it. The Showa era ran from 1926 to 1989 and Heisei from 1989 to 2019, so Showa Kayo Sunday suits older songs and Heisei Retro Rewind suits the 90s and 2000s.
- Short titles such as Konbini at 2AM and Yuugure (Dusk) stay readable on a small cover tile. Save a long lowercase caption like it's raining in tokyo and i'm fine for a playlist your friends will see.
- For a public playlist, pick a title with a word people search for, such as city pop, J-rock, lo-fi or karaoke. City Pop After Dark and J-Rock Adrenaline say the genre in the name.
- Look a Japanese word up before you build a whole playlist around it, and again before you write it in kana or kanji. The glosses here are brief and leave out nuance.
Frequently asked questions
What are some good Japanese playlist names?
Try Yoru no Drive (Night Drive), Komorebi Mornings, City Pop After Dark, Konbini at 2AM, Shinkansen Window Seat or Showa Kayo Sunday. Each one joins a Japanese word, place or era to a mood or a time of day, so a listener knows what to expect before pressing play. For something quieter, the lowercase captions include slow morning, rice cooker singing.
How are the Japanese titles written?
In Hepburn romaji without macrons, with long vowels written out, as in Yuugure (Dusk) and Shuumatsu (Weekend) Rotation. Names and labels that English already spells its own way, such as Tokyo, Kyoto and Showa, keep that spelling. Particles such as no, ni, de and to are lowercase, and most phrases carry a short English gloss in parentheses.
Do the titles use real artists, bands or songs?
No. They are written as moods, times, seasons and genres, with real places such as Shibuya, Dotonbori and the Kamo River. An everyday word or phrase can still match a song or album title somewhere by coincidence, and nobody has checked that or whether a title is already in use on a music service.
What do city pop, Showa kayo and enka mean?
City pop is a name for polished, urban Japanese pop of the late 1970s and the 1980s, with touches of funk, soft rock and fusion. Showa kayo is the pop music of the Showa era, and enka is a sentimental ballad style with a wide vibrato. That is why the list has City Pop for the Passenger Seat, Showa Retro Living Room and Enka for Long Winter Nights.
