Generate house names from India for a new home, flat or family bungalow: dwelling-word names like Shanti Nivas and Prem Kutir, blessing names like Ashirwad and Matru Chhaya, South Indian forms like Lakshmi Nilayam and Anbu Illam, and one-word names like Parijat, Sukoon and Thulasi.

About Indian house names

These are house names from India, the kind painted on the gate plate of a bungalow, a flat or a family home. The best-known pattern pairs a feeling or a blessing with a dwelling word. Nivas, Sadan and Bhavan mean a house, Kutir is a cottage, Kunj a bower or grove, Niketan and Dham an abode, so Shanti Nivas is an abode of peace and Prem Kutir a cottage of love. A second family honors parents and teachers: Ashirwad (blessing), Matru Chhaya (mother's shade), Guru Kripa (the teacher's grace).

Language decides the form. Telugu homes use Nilayam (Lakshmi Nilayam), Kannada homes Nilaya (Manjunatha Nilaya) and Tamil homes Illam (Anbu Illam, house of love), while Kerala favors a single word such as Thulasi, Nandanam or Souparnika. Marathi plates read Matoshree, Gharkul or Swapnapurti, Bengali ones Abakash or Niribili. Urdu and Persian give Manzil, Mahal, Gulshan and Aashiyana (nest). Christian families in Kerala and Goa often choose Bethel, Ebenezer or Grace Villa.

More than half of the list is one-word names: flowers and trees like Parijat and Gulmohar, rivers like Kaveri and Alaknanda, and feeling words like Sukoon, Basera and Swapna. The rest includes deity and sacred-place names such as Gokul and Sai Krupa, a few family names, and English names like Sunshine Villa. Spellings follow common name-plate romanization without diacritics.

How to choose Indian house names

  • Match the dwelling word to your language. Nilayam reads as Telugu, Nilaya as Kannada, Illam as Tamil and Nivas or Sadan as Hindi, Marathi or Gujarati, so Anbu Illam and Prem Nivas say much the same thing in different homes.
  • Say the name with your address. A one-word name such as Parijat, Ashray or Thanal is quick to tell a courier, while Mata Pita Ka Ashirwad suits a plate more than a form.
  • Pick one spelling and keep it. Nivas and Niwas, Kripa and Krupa, Bhavan and Bhawan are the same words in different romanizations; the plate, the letterbox and the online map should agree.
  • A name that honors a parent or teacher, such as Matru Smruti or Guru Ashish, is a family decision. Ask the elders before the plate is ordered.
  • Keep the house number on the plate as well. The name is a custom, not an address: post and deliveries usually still go by the number and street.

Frequently asked questions

What do Nivas, Sadan, Bhavan and Kutir mean?

All four are dwelling words that came from Sanskrit into Hindi and other Indian languages. Nivas means residence, Sadan and Bhavan mean house, and Kutir means cottage or hut. The list also uses Kunj (bower), Niketan and Dham (abode), as in Radha Kunj, Anand Niketan and Sai Dham.

Which house names here are from Sanskrit?

Many of them. Ashirwad, Anugraha, Tapovan, Parijat, Kalpavriksha and Vatika are Sanskrit words or come straight from Sanskrit, as do the dwelling words Nivas, Sadan and Niketan. Names like Sukoon, Gulshan and Manzil come through Urdu and Persian instead, and Illam, Thendral and Belaku are Tamil and Kannada words.

Are there South Indian house names in the list?

Yes, about a fifth of the list. Telugu forms end in Nilayam (Sai Nilayam, Ananda Nilayam), Kannada forms in Nilaya or Krupa (Raghavendra Krupa), and Tamil forms in Illam or Agam (Arul Illam, Anbagam). There are also Malayalam names such as Ambadi, Gokulam, Kilikoodu and Thiruvonam.

Can I use these names outside India?

Yes. Families in the diaspora put the same names on homes abroad, and a short name like Aashiyana, Gokul or Shalom is easy for neighbors to say. Check your local rules on house signs, since a name rarely replaces the street number.
