Indian Fantasy Name Generator
South Asian names for fantasy heroes and courts
A list of 1,000 Indian-flavored fantasy names that pair real South Asian given names with bynames, court titles and coined clan banners, such as Rajkumar Tejasvin of the Amber Fort, Begum Mahrukh of the Jasmine Court and Kamalini the Lotus-Eyed.
About Indian fantasy names
South Asian names tend to mean something, and that is what makes them work so well in fantasy. Many are Sanskrit compounds that join two words: Simhabala is lion plus strength, Hemalata is gold plus creeper, Chandramukhi is moon-faced. This list builds on that habit. It takes real given names and name elements from Sanskrit, Hindi, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi, Persianate and Himalayan naming and adds what a fantasy character needs: a byname, a court title or a clan banner.
Titles follow rank and sex. Raja, Maharaja, Rajkumar, Yuvraj and Senapati belong to men; Rani, Maharani, Rajkumari and Rajmata to women. Courtiers in the Persianate style carry Mirza, Nawab or Beg, and court ladies Begum, Shahzadi or Khanum. Southern heroes use Tamil titles such as Arasan, Ilavarasi and Thalapathi.
The 1,000 names run through about sixteen styles: desert princes and banner clans, queens and court ladies, sages and priestesses, physicians and astrologers, sultanate-style courtiers, southern sea kingdoms, river and hill adventurers, mountain monks, English epithets, single compounds and a few yakshas, apsaras and serpent folk. The courtiers and rulers are invented for fiction; none is meant to be a historical figure.
How to choose Indian fantasy names
- Match the title to the character: Rajkumar or Rajkumari for a prince or princess, Senapati for a general, Begum or Shahzadi for a lady of a Persianate court. A title on the wrong rank or sex reads as a mistake.
- Give each kingdom one naming style. Tamil names such as Yazhini Kathiravan suit a southern sea kingdom and Mirza or Nawab names a sultanate-style court, so readers can place a character from the name alone.
- Start with a single compound such as Simhabala or Hemalata, and add a byname only when the character has earned one in play.
- Say the name aloud before you commit. A long compound needs a short call name at the table, so Vajrabahu can become Vajra among friends.
- Keep gods, saints and real communities out of jokes and villain rosters. When a clan needs a name, coin a banner in the style of Vajraketu (thunderbolt banner) or Simhadhvaja (lion banner).
Frequently asked questions
What kinds of names does the Indian fantasy name generator give?
It mixes about sixteen styles, so a reroll can land on a general like Senapati Vajrabahu, a rider like Harjot Kaur of the Five Rivers, a monk like Abbot Sonam Dorje of the Cliff Monastery or a creature like Ratnaphana the Jewel-Hooded Serpent. Most entries are human characters; only a small share are yakshas, apsaras and other beings of folklore.
Are these real Indian names?
The given names and name elements are real ones from South Asian languages, and the titles are real titles. The bynames, clan banners and combinations are made up for fantasy, so a name like Rao Hemraj Dune-Rider belongs to no one in history. Indian here means South Asian.
What do titles like Rajkumar, Senapati and Begum mean?
Raja is a king and Rani a queen, Rajkumar and Rajkumari are a prince and a princess, Yuvraj is a crown prince and Senapati commands an army. Mirza and Nawab are noble titles of Persianate courts and Begum is a lady of rank. Acharya is a teacher, Vaidya a physician and Jyotishi an astrologer.
Can I use these names for D&D characters or in a novel?
Yes, they are meant for your own characters, courts and campaigns. The list has not been compared with existing books, films or games, so search a name before you publish under it. If your setting borrows from a living culture, treat its faiths and communities with the same care you would want for your own.
