IKEA Name Generator

IKEA product names look like gibberish to most shoppers, but they follow a strict system invented by founder Ingvar Kamprad, who was dyslexic and found words easier to remember than article numbers. Sofas and armchairs are Swedish place names, beds and wardrobes are Norwegian places, dining tables are Finnish places, bookcases are occupations or Scandinavian boys' names, fabrics and curtains are girls' names, bathroom items are lakes and rivers, children's products are animals and adjectives, and kitchen gadgets are often just the Swedish word for the thing. Almost every name is printed in capitals and many end in -IG or -LIG (the Swedish adjective endings), or in place-name suffixes such as -BY, -VIK, -HOLM, -TORP, -DAL and -NÄS.

That system is easy to parody once you know it. The names here fall into four styles: invented Swedish adjectives (SNÖRKLIG, KLUMPIG, FLÄRDIG), fake place names for big furniture (SÖVDAL, TRÅNGHOLM, SNÅLVIK), real Swedish words for everyday things that already sound like products (KÖTTBULLE, TUPPLUR, GRYTLAPP), and umlaut-heavy English jokes about the flat-pack experience (FLÄTPAK, MISSINGSKRUV, DIVÖRCE). Use them to label a fake catalogue, name a bookshelf in a comic, caption a meme, or run a 'real or fake IKEA name' quiz at a party.
