Generate Hollywood names that sound like they belong on a marquee: Golden Age glamour like Vivienne Laroux and Rex Marlowe, modern A-list names like Tatum Reyes and Knox Bellamy, plus mononyms and hyphenated Hollywood-royalty surnames. Use them as a stage name, for film and TV characters, or just to find your own movie-star alter ego.

About Hollywood names

Hollywood names are manufactured, and the studios never hid it. In the Golden Age a contract player arrived with a birth name and left the front office with something shorter, smoother and more printable: a two-syllable first name and a surname with either French or English-aristocratic polish (Laroux, Fontaine, Devereaux, Carmichael) for the women, and something blunt and athletic (Rock, Clay, Brock, Dirk, paired with Sterling, Callahan, Lockwood) for the leading men. The aim was a name that looked balanced on a poster and could be shouted across a red carpet.

Modern Hollywood names work differently. Nobody is forced to change anything, so the winning formula is distinctiveness: an unusual first name with a plain surname (Tatum Reyes, Knox Bellamy, Wren Tennyson), a single striking mononym (Harlow, Sable, Valentino), or a double-barrelled surname that signals Hollywood royalty (Arabella Fairweather-Hale). Names from Spanish, Korean, Nigerian, Indian and Italian families now sit comfortably beside the Anglo marquee classics, and a name that reads as authentically someone's is more bankable than one that sounds invented.

The list mixes all three eras. Pick by the era your character or persona belongs to, say the name aloud – marquee names have a natural trochaic beat, VIV-ienne la-ROUX – and check that no working actor already owns it before you print it on a headshot.

How to choose Hollywood names

  • Match the era: French or aristocratic surnames (Fontaine, Devereaux, Ashcombe) read as 1930s–50s studio glamour, while unusual first name plus plain surname (Tatum Reyes, Jett Hollis) reads as current A-list.
  • Count the beats. The classic marquee rhythm is two syllables plus two (Rex Marlowe, Lola Marchand) or three plus one (Vivienne Cross); names longer than five syllables rarely survive a movie poster.
  • For a stage name you'll actually use, search IMDb and the SAG-AFTRA database first – the union will not register a professional name already in use by another member.
  • Mononyms (Harlow, Sable, Cruz) only work if the name is rare; a common first name used alone is a nickname, not a brand.
  • Hyphenated surnames (Castellane-Ross, Drummond-Pryce) instantly suggest old-money Hollywood dynasties – use them for nepo-baby characters, socialites and producers' daughters.

Frequently asked questions

How did old Hollywood stars get their names?

Studio publicity departments assigned them. Under the contract system, executives at MGM, Warner Bros. and Paramount routinely renamed actors to something shorter, easier to spell and free of ethnic or working-class associations, favouring polished French-style surnames for actresses and tough single-syllable first names for actors. Many stars only learned their new name when they saw it in the trade papers.

Can I use one of these as my real stage name?

Yes – every name here is original, not a living performer's name. Before committing, check IMDb, social media handles and, if you're in the US, the SAG-AFTRA member name search, since the union requires professional names to be unique among its members.

What makes a name sound like a movie star?

Rhythm and contrast. Marquee names usually have a strong stressed syllable in each half (REX mar-LOWE, ta-TUM REY-es), pair a soft first name with a hard surname or vice versa, and avoid sounds that blur together when spoken fast. Rare-but-pronounceable beats both common and unpronounceable.

Do these work for fictional characters?

They're ideal for it – screenwriters, novelists and game designers use names like these for in-universe movie stars, Golden Age starlets, washed-up action heroes, influencers-turned-actors and Hollywood dynasty families. Pair an era-appropriate name with a studio or film title from our film and studio generators.
