Generate island-themed team names for lūʻau parties, field days, paddling crews, beach volleyball and trivia nights: spirit names like Aloha Aces and Team ʻOhana, ocean names like Big Wave Riders, animal names like Honu Heroes, food names like Poke Bowlers and all-Hawaiian names with a translation, such as Nā Koa (The Warriors).

About Hawaiian team names

A Hawaiian theme suits a team almost anywhere: a lūʻau-themed office party, a school field day, a beach volleyball league, a trivia night or an outrigger canoe crew. Most names here join an English team word to a well-known Hawaiian word or an island image: Aloha Aces, Shaka Squad, Team ʻOhana, Honu Heroes, Big Wave Riders, Kona Wind.

There are ten groups: aloha and ʻohana spirit names, ocean and paddling names (Keep the Ama Down, Nalu Riders), lava names (Pāhoehoe Flow), island animals such as honu (green sea turtle), manō (shark), nēnē (Hawaiian goose) and ʻio (Hawaiian hawk), flowers and plants, real places from Waikīkī to Nā Pali, island food (Poke Bowlers, Shave Ice All-Stars), sunshine and rainbows, puns, and all-Hawaiian names with a translation in parentheses, like Nā Koa (The Warriors) and Laulima (Many Hands Together).

Hawaiian words are written with the ʻokina (ʻ) and the kahakō, the line over a long vowel, because both change how a word sounds and what it means. The list keeps to common vocabulary and leaves out gods, chiefs and monarchs. The list has not been checked by Hawaiian speakers, so look a word up in a Hawaiian dictionary before it goes on a banner. The three tiki names are party-theme names, not Hawaiian words.

How to choose Hawaiian team names

  • Keep the ʻokina and the kahakō when you print the name. ʻOhana, Nā Koa and Manō are spelled with them, and phone and computer keyboards can type both.
  • Do not add an English s to a Hawaiian word. The plural is shown by nā in front, so a team is Nā Honu or Honu Heroes, never the Honus.
  • Match the name to the event. Poke Bowlers is made for a bowling night, Sunset Beach Spikers and Shaka Spikers for volleyball, Keep the Ama Down for a canoe crew and Magma Cum Laude for trivia.
  • Keep the translation next to an all-Hawaiian name the first time you use it. Laulima (Many Hands Together) and Imua (Forward) mean more to a mixed group once everyone knows what they say.
  • Treat the culture with respect. Skip costume jokes and the names of gods and royalty, and if your team includes people from Hawaiʻi, ask them which name sounds right.

Frequently asked questions

What are good Hawaiian team names?

Aloha Aces, Shaka Squad, Team ʻOhana, Honu Heroes and Big Wave Riders are easy for any group to say and cheer. For something more local in flavor, try Mauka to Makai, Plate Lunch Bunch or Nēnē Crossing.

What do the Hawaiian words in these names mean?

Aloha is love and a greeting, ʻohana is family, mahalo is thank you, honu is the green sea turtle, manō is shark, nalu is wave, kai is sea and koa means brave or warrior. Names that are entirely in Hawaiian carry a translation in parentheses, for example Ke Kai (The Sea) and Lōkahi (Unity).

What are good team names for a lūʻau party or theme day?

Food and shirt names get a laugh without much explaining: Pineapple Crush, Shave Ice All-Stars, Loud Shirt Crew, Aloha Shirt Fridays and Lūʻau Line Dancers. Out of Office Aloha suits a work party.

Are these the names of real Hawaii sports teams?

No. These are theme names for your own team, and the page does not list college, high school or club teams from Hawaiʻi. Names such as Hilo Side Hitters and Kona Coast Cruisers use real places, and any name here could match a club somewhere, so search before you register for a league.
