Goblincore Name Generator
Mossy, muddy names for small scruffy collectors
Generate goblincore names for chosen names, OCs, art accounts and usernames: single words like Moss, Newt, Thimble and Hagstone, character names like Fennick Mudwort and Bodkin Mosspocket, titles like Keeper of Buttons, and handles like mosshoard and toadstool.thief.
About goblincore names
Goblincore is the aesthetic of the overlooked corner of the woods: moss, mud, fungi, frogs, snails, beetles, bones and whatever shiny thing turned up on the path. Its names follow the same rule. They are small, earthy and a little scruffy, and most of them are not gendered at all, which is part of why people pick them as chosen names and for original characters.
The list is built in layers. Single words come from plants and fungi (Moss, Lichen, Sundew, Inkcap), small creatures (Toad, Newt, Natterjack, Moss Piglet), pocket clutter (Button, Thimble, Bottlecap, Aglet) and things found on a walk (Pebble, Hagstone, Wishbone, Seaglass). Two-part character names pair a short first name with a surname taken from weeds and wet places, such as Fennick Mudwort or Snuffle Stitchwort. Titles like Keeper of Buttons suit a profile or a character sheet, and the lowercase handles (mosshoard, logflipper, morel.compass) are written the way people type a username.
The hoard here is trinkets only: buttons, keys, bottle caps, feathers and odd rocks. Snarling fantasy monster names and the full run of real mushroom species have pages of their own.
How to choose goblincore names
- For a name you will answer to, test it out loud for a week. One syllable carries best across a room (Moss, Bog, Newt, Conk), and the long ones shorten well: Natterjack becomes Natter or Jack, Bottlecap becomes Cap.
- Match a character's surname to a habitat. Bogbean, Pondweed and Frogbit belong to a pond dweller, Deadnettle and Hedgebottom to the hedgerow, Buttonjar and Rustlatch to the shed and the attic.
- Look a word up before you adopt it, because many are real things with a story: a sundew is a bog plant that eats insects, a natterjack is a toad, and a hagstone is a pebble with a natural hole through it.
- For a handle, search the platform yourself first. If yours is gone, swap the dot for an underscore or add a small number (pebble.no.9, newt_x3) and leave your birth year out of it.
- Use a title as the display name above a handle: Professor Isopod or Worm Charmer on top, logflipper or isopod.pile underneath.
Frequently asked questions
What is a goblincore name?
A short, earthy name taken from the scruffy side of nature or from small found objects. Typical picks are Moss, Toad, Lichen, Beetle, Bramble, Possum, Rust, Button and Thimble. They suit chosen names, original characters, pets and art accounts.
Are goblincore names gender neutral?
Nearly all of them are. A word like Newt, Peat, Magpie or Pebble carries no gender, and the two-part names use short first names such as Pip, Wick, Hob and Quill that work for anyone. If you want a softer or a rougher sound, choose by the consonants: Sundew and Selfheal are soft, Conk, Grit and Hobnail are blunt.
Can I use these as usernames?
Yes. The lowercase entries such as snailtrinkets, pebble_pockets and gifts.from.crows are written as handles, and most single words can be joined into one. Nobody has checked these handles on any platform, so search the app you use before you settle on one.
Why are there no gold, coin or monster names?
The goblin in goblincore is a friendly collector of buttons, bottle caps, bones and shiny rocks, so the list keeps to harmless clutter and small creatures. Gold, coins and greed are left out on purpose, because those old goblin stereotypes have an ugly history. Snarling fantasy names live on the goblin name generator instead.
