Gender Neutral Fantasy Name Generator
Fantasy names that read as neither he nor she
Generate gender neutral fantasy names for nonbinary, androgynous or still-undecided characters: soft coinages like Kaelis and Ashryn, nature and virtue names like Bracken and Solace, full names like Caelum Reedmere, and epithets like Thessin the Unsworn.
About gender neutral fantasy names
Readers of English take most of their gender cues from the end of a name. Endings such as -a, -ia, -elle and -wen tend to read as feminine, while -us, -ric, -ald and -son tend to read as masculine. The invented names in this list avoid both sets and close on soft consonants and unstressed syllables instead: Kaelis, Ashryn, Thessin, Lioren, Maerith. The same rule shapes the longer elven forms (Aelireth, Vaeloris) and the blunt one-syllable names for dwarves, orcs and giant-kin (Keld, Skarn, Tharn).
Word names carry no grammatical gender at all, which is why they work so well here. You will find nature names with a wilder edge than the usual baby-name picks (Bracken, Tarn, Lichen, Curlew), virtue and concept names in the style D&D uses for tieflings (Solace, Vigil, Candor), short clipped names for rogues and urchins (Pip, Rook, Nim), and descriptive phrase names such as Seven Quiet Rivers for spirits, beast-folk and monks.
More than a quarter of the list is full names and epithets. The surnames come from landscape and craft rather than from a father or mother, so there is no -son or -daughter to explain, and the epithets skip lord, lady, king and queen in favor of titles anyone can hold: Oryn Lantern-Bearer, Corrin the Third Heir, Thessin the Unsworn.
How to choose gender neutral fantasy names
- Check the last syllable first. If a name you like ends in -a or -us, swapping the ending for -is, -en, -yn or -ith usually neutralizes it without losing the sound: Kaela becomes Kaelis, Aldus becomes Aldren.
- Give the character titles that match. Warden, Heir, Magister, Captain, Sovereign and Envoy carry rank without gender, and an epithet such as the Wayfinder or the Unhurried does the same job in a tavern introduction.
- Say the name in a sentence with they, she and he in turn. A good neutral name sits comfortably with all three, which also helps if the character's gender is something you plan to discover during play.
- Use word names for cultures where names are chosen or earned, such as tieflings, druids, monks and changelings, and keep the invented coinages for names given at birth.
- For a full name, pair a short first name with a long surname or the reverse. Bryn Ashfallow and Tessarin Mossgrave are easier to say at the table than two long names in a row.
Frequently asked questions
What makes a fantasy name gender neutral?
Mostly the ending and the associations. Names that close on -is, -yn, -en, -el or -ith, such as Kaelis, Ashryn and Maerith, do not match the patterns English speakers hear as feminine or masculine. Word names like Tarn, Solace and Rook are neutral because they were never given names to begin with.
What are good nonbinary names for a D&D character?
For humans and half-elves try Talis, Halcyn or Bryn Ashfallow. Elves suit the longer forms such as Aelireth and Vaeloris, dwarves and half-orcs suit Durrin, Korrim or Skarn, and tieflings can take a virtue name like Vigil or Candor. Rogues and halflings often work best with a short name like Pip, Quill or Jem.
Can I use these names for a male or female character?
Yes. Neutral means the name does not signal a gender, not that it rules one out. Any name here works for a man, a woman, a nonbinary character, or a construct, spirit or shapeshifter for whom the question does not apply.
Are these names from real languages?
Most of the longer names are invented coinages built on common fantasy sound patterns, not words from a real language, and the nature and virtue names are ordinary English words. A few short entries, such as Bryn, Jun and Ori, also exist as real given names in more than one culture. If you plan to publish, search your chosen name first in case an invented one happens to match a word or name you did not intend.
