Gelfling Name Generator

Gelfling names in The Dark Crystal are short, soft and easy to say, which is exactly why they feel so different from the hissing, clicking names of the Skeksis. Most are one or two syllables built from gentle consonants and open vowels: Jen, Kira, Rian, Brea, Deet, Naia, Kylan, Tavra. Female names lean toward -a and -ia endings, male names toward -n and -o, but the line is loose, and plenty of names (Mira, Juni, Amri) could belong to anyone. Even the elders and rulers keep it simple; the title Maudra does the heavy lifting, as in Maudra Fara or All-Maudra Mayrin.

Clan gives a name its flavor. Sifa sailors often carry a clipped apostrophe ending like Bobb'N and Lath'N. Dousan names from the Crystal Desert have a harder, drier sound (Rek'yr). Grottan cave-dwellers have murmuring names such as Deet, Amri and Argot, while the Vapra of Ha'rar sound a little more refined (Seladon, Tavra, Brea). When a Gelfling is introduced formally, the name is usually followed by a home or clan: Rian of Stonewood, Gurjin of the Drenchen.
